Free fun at Oswego's Little White School Museum
Looking for a cool place for some family fun this summer? Try Oswego’s Little White School Museum, 72 Polk Street (Jackson at Polk), Oswego.
Families who visit are challenged to try the “I Spy” activity. Aimed at three separate age groups from young children through adult, the various levels of “I Spy” challenge visitors to spot artifacts and architectural features in the museum on special activity sheets. It takes a keen eye to find all of the items on the “I Spy” sheet.
Younger visitors are also challenged to try their hand at two transportation timeline activities in the museum.
Each Friday this summer, the museum is hosting “Fabulous Friday” activities. Aimed at kids and their parents, this weekly activity invites visitors to find out what did kids did before video games, cell phones, and computers. Families are welcome to drop in for this free event between 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. every Friday to try their hands at classic games, crafts, and activities that were popular years ago.
Visitors are also invited to stroll the museum grounds. The Heritage Perennial Garden borders the site and was begun more than 30 years ago using heirloom perennial flowers collected from long-time Oswego residents. Today, the garden is maintained by the Hilltop Garden Club in cooperation with the Oswegoland Park District. Interpretive signs on the grounds tell the fascinating stories of the garden and of the Little White School Museum itself. Visitors can stroll the brick pathways, stop and sit on the convenient benches, or have a picnic under the ancient walnut tree using the picnic bench.
Museum admission is free. Regular hours are noon to 4 p.m. Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays and Saturdays. The museum’s archives and research area is open Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to noon.
