Become a Geocaching Adventurer
Park District offering more caches for discovery.
Just when you think you have uncovered all this area has to offer, we’ve got a whole new adventure for you!
This winter the Oswegoland Park District invites you to explore a new frontier in outdoor activities. Our geocaching event encourages residents of the Oswego, Montgomery and Plainfield area to bundle up and seek secret booty. Geocaching is an orienteering activity where people use compasses, hand held GPS devices or smart phones to locate treasures hidden all over the world. Currently there are over 1000 caches hidden in the Oswego area alone. These treasures are hidden by other enthusiasts.
Last month we had our first geo-cacher find all 10 of the Oswegoland Park District caches. Jason Sneller of Oswego sought out each of the event’s caches hidden throughout Oswegoland parks . After receiving a hand held GPS for the holidays, Jason decided to try out the Winter Cache and Carry. A couple of the caches were tough. He had to go back for one twice. With the help of his three children he found each of the required treasures and solved the secret phrase. Jason wins an insulated Oswegoland Park District lunch cooler and a chance to win the grand prize of a Season Pass to the Civic Center this summer.
The best part of geocaching is after people like Jason find the caches, they put them right back into their cryptic nests for the next person to discover. The Winter Cache and Carry is going on now. Anyone of any age can start geocaching today.
The directions to get started are simple. Use your orienteering device or download a free application to your smarth phone. Set up a free account at geocaching.com. Locate the 10 OPD Cache & Carry caches. Once you have found a cache, log your name and note the special code. Then put the cache back where you found it. Once you find all the special codes, figure out the secret phrase. When you have figured it out, come to a park district office, get your prize and fill out an entry for the Grand Prize. All entries must be submitted by March 31 at noon for the April 2 drawing.
We invite you to become an adventurer this season with the Oswegoland Park District’s Winter Cache & Carry event. There is so much more to do outdoors than you ever thought!
