Census: Oswego's Median Home Price Above State Average, Over 32 Percent of Population Under 18
The U.S. Census Bureau has released information highlighting demographics for cities and town across the nation, including Oswego.
Census information is out, and it shows that Oswego is mostly white, educated and financially well-off. In addition, women are in the majority by a slim margin.
In Oswego, 88.3 percent of residents own their own homes and those homes are worth a median of $258,400, well above the median Illinois home price of $198,500, according to newly released census information.
In 2011, it was estimated 30,856 people called Oswego home, up 1.7 percent or 503 people from April 2010, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The U.S. Census Bureau released information Thursday gathered between 2007-11 for its American Communities Survey, providing statistics down to the neighborhood level on school enrollment, jobs, housing and many other measures, according to the bureau.
“The Census Bureau is striving like never before to make our statistics easier to find and use,” U.S. Census Bureau Acting Director Thomas Mesenbourg said. “We’re innovating with new technology to make statistical information more interactive and relevant to younger and more diverse audiences. As our Founding Fathers recognized, having an informed population is crucial to our nation’s democracy. At the Census Bureau, we are doing our part to empower Americans with statistical information so they have an accurate picture of our nation’s people, places and economy.”
Women are the majority of the population, making up 50.9 percent of the population. Children under 5 make up 8.4 percent of the population, people under 18 make up 32.6 percent, and seniors older than 65 make up 13.1 percent of the population as of 2010.
About 3.07 people live per home in Oswego and there are 9,493 households.
Those who live in town and commute daily spend about a mean travel time of 33.3 minutes getting to work and earn a median household income of $93,588—well above the state median income of $56,576.
