Boulder Hill Drive-By Shooting Shocks Neighbors

No one injured; Kendall County Sheriff's Office looking for dark-colored minivan.

Updated at 11:15 a.m.

The Kendall County Sheriff's Office is investigating a drive-by shooting that occurred at about 1:35 p.m. Wednesday in the first block of Circle Drive East in Boulder Hill.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Deputy Craig French said three shots were fired, and both the home and a vehicle were hit. The home was occupied at the time, but French said no one was injured.

French described the vehicle as a "dark-colored mini-van." French also said the residential neighborhood is not known for drug or gang activity and that it's been years to his recollection since such an incident has occurred in Boulder Hill.

Neighbors along that block backed him up. Thelma Weeks said she has lived in the neighborhood for 49 years and has never seen anything like what happened Wednesday.

"I heard shots, but I didn't see anything," she said. "It sounded to me like someone trying to separate two metal things with a sledgehammer."

Weeks said police blocked off Circle Drive East from Wyndham Drive to Marnel Road while investigating the shooting.

Darrell Rittierodt said he heard "four or five shots" and saw the police arrive and barricade the road. He didn't see anything else, he said.

Rittierodt has lived on that block for 25 years, he said, and like Weeks, he's never seen or heard a shooting there before.

"It's the first time ever," he said.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

I live on Greenfield Rd, Boulder Hill. I have lived there for only 2 years. I had heard that Boulder Hill was a nice community, but now this?? I don't know if I want to stay here or not. There are houses for sale on my block and "strange and different" people are moving in. Things are changing and not for the good.

Houses are for sale because they aren't selling. Have you introduced yourself to the "strange and different" people? Knowing your neighbors goes a long way.

I have gone over to introduce myself, (and other neighbors have also) then we get the cold shoulder from them, we wave when they drive by, and they don't acknowledge it. So we don't bother with them.

If people have things to hide they know how to do it. "Those" kind of people live everywhere. This is a business to them and they keep it safe and quiet. Somebody messed up and the price was going to be payed.

I have lived in Boulder Hil for almost 18 years and have not seen anything like this! I know the neighborhood has changed somewhat but if some of us move out we may be opening the door to bad behavior!

I too am only two blocks away from this garbage. I have lived here my whole life. (37 yrs) My dad still has the house I grew up in. Boulder Hill has changed and not for the better. More and more people come in and don't care about their property. They don't care about watching their children. And they bring in a bunch of problems. In my opinion it's only getting worse and once the market gets back up....I am out. My children deserve better.

Sarah have you ever called the police when you see this man selling drugs? How can anyone expect the community to get better if you don't report the bad behavior? The police need your help and if all the people stood up and reported suspicious activity it would scare the criminals out, they will leave. Call and ask for more patrols, call and report suspicious cars. The police will help and they will appreciate knowing the community is supporting them.

Julie--I feel the same way--it has to be reported--Sarah you can do it thru Crimestoppers. I have lived in Boulder Hill since I was 8 years old-that's 54 years!! All 3 of my kids and their families live on "the Hill" The drive by was right at the end of my daughters street. Yea it worries me. With the economy the way it is--dropping housing prices--making them more affordable to the bad elements. Did you know if a trouble making kid gets kicked out of their school--they can go to a different school district and that district has to take them. Where do you think they want to go--a good dist. namely #308. Moving away only opens more housing for them. Stay put and if see anything unsavory going on in your neighborhood-report it!!

It's not just in Boulder Hill. We had some "suspicious activity" on my street and I spoke to the Police Dept. about what I saw. They were appreciative that I came forward with the information and asked me to let them know if/when I see the individuals or vehicles that appear to give me concern (within reason), I am to contact them. After speaking with the officer, we saw an increased police presence in our neighborhood for awhile. The police cannot be everywhere at all times -- if the people in the neighborhoods don't open their eyes, get involved and speak up, this "garbage" will just continue to take over and things won't change.

Julie, my neighbors and I have talked to the Kendall County officers when I had problems in my neighborhood. Unfortunately it didn't help. They promised more patrols and we never saw them. They told us they had a warrant on someone in the house but couldn't take him in because no one would answer the door. Who knew you could avoid getting arrested by just never answering the door.

I just moved back to Boulder Hill after being gone for 4 years. It has changed and not for the better. I am moving out and will not look back. Boulder Hill used to be such a nice place to live. There's a family on the street where the Grandma has her grandchildren living with her because their Mom don't want the trouble they bring. One of the boys has died from a drug overdose and these kids glorify it. The other grandson is going to prison and keeps threatening another boy who he says told on him. I have an idea - - don't do it and there's nothing for anyone to tell. I'm glad I'm a renter - - I'm outta here.

This is certainly scary beyond words. Nobody wants to read about a drive-by shooting on their street or even in their own neighborhood for that matter. I'm glad that nobody was hurt in the shooting, and hopefully this will spur the Montgomery police to up their patrols of Boulder Hill. As a community we have to come together and not only report suspicious activity, but identify the cause. Whether it's drugs, alcohol, or gangs there is a root to the problem. It could be as simple as teens with too much idle time on their hands have turned to bad behavior to entertain themselves. I have lived in Boulder Hill for about a year and a half now, and my experience here has been wonderful thus far. My neighbors have been absolutely amazing and made us feel welcome from the moment we moved in. From the majority of posts it sounds like we have a group of good people concerned about the state of our neighborhood, but harping on about how the neighborhood has "gone down-hill" isn't going to get us anywhere. If anything your only helping to scare away more good people who are current or potential residents that might be skimming these posts.

@Diane: It's unfortunate that your initial attempts to welcome your neighbors fell on deaf hears. I would suggest that you persist showing them your goodwill and friendly waves. The best thing you can do is always show your welcoming smile and perhaps one day they will return your friendship.

I've lived in Boulder Hill for over 5 years. Conditions seem to depend on the exact street. I've come home to Homeland Security sealing off a house on the street for possible terrorist activity. The homeowner had a fire, caused by gro-lights supporting 50 marijuana plants. The firemen notified the police who found chemicals and Islamic literature. He talked his way out of the entire situation and had the house rehabbed. Now he runs it as a boarding house for people responding to cardboard signs he leaves on telephone poles on Rt. 25. He’s actually one of the nicest people on the street. There are several kind elderly people on the street who keep to themselves, and a family who tried to sell only to have the homeowner across the street (a convicted drug dealer) ferociously rev up his commercial racing car whenever there was a showing. Three years later and they are just stuck here. Then there's the two guys running automotive repair businesses out of their garages. Cash sales, no insurance, no EPA compliant handling of prestone and oil. Then there's the house where 2 sheriff's cars out in front is unbelievably common. All on the same street. Why doesn't Boulder Hill become part of the Village of Oswego? When an investor on the next street was roofing a house at 6AM waking up the neighborhood, the responding sheriff said he couldn’t do anything because Boulder Hill has no rules. We pay enough taxes to live as part of a standard town with reasonable rules.
