Look for a 1980-Style Romney Win, says Mary Matalin

The veteran GOP strategist visits Chicago and touts Romney • Will Illinois Democrats make income tax hike permanent in lame-duck session? • Teachers Retirement System may "bleed out".

Republican political strategist Mary Matalin predicts a 1980 redux on Election Day, with Mitt Romney emerging victorious by 7 percentage points in the popular vote.

Matalin, 59, spoke Thursday evening at St. Xavier University in the Mount Greenwood community of Chicago alongside Democratic strategist Donna Brazile, who believes the race will be much, much closer.

"Just 2 to 3 points, favoring the president," Brazile said.

Matalin and Brazile — who are close friends — went back and forth in a discussion of presidential politics and campaign war stories in SXU's Shannon Center before a crowd of 1,000 people.

Matalin, a Calumet City native who says she may never have left Chicago had the steel mills survived, allowed that she might be kidding herself. Still, she's thinking "landslide" because she believes Romney's ground game is just better than Barack Obama's, even though the Democrats are micro targeting people via their friends on Twitter and Facebook.

Brazile stood in for Arianna Huffington, founder and editor of the Huffington Post, who was co-headliner of the evening but had to back out due to hip surgery. Brazile said she believes Romney already has lost Ohio.

State Tax Hike Fear: Scott Reeder, reporting in the advance email newsletter for his Reeder Report, writes that that Illinois Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, believes the Democrats in the General Assembly may make the temporary 67 percent income tax hike permanent in the lame duck session that starts Jan. 9.

Radogno told the Reeder Report:

“It would be absolutely in character for the Democratic majority to call something like this up for a vote.”

Radogno said the ruling Democrats are spending money in a manner that would suggest they plan to make the tax hike permanent. She added she would not vote for an extension of the income tax increase either now or at the time it is set to partially expire at the end of 2014.

Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago, said via a spokeswoman that any notion of extending the tax-hike is "a flat-out lie."

Teachers Retirement System Could Bleed Out: IllinoisWatchdog.org is reporting that the financial prospects for the state's teachers retirement system are looking worse. The Teachers’ Retirement System is seeking $3.4 billion from the state for its portion of the pension costs for fiscal year 2014. That’s about $500 million more than the system sought from the state for the previous fiscal year.

Reports Illinois Watchdog's Jayette Bolinski:

TRS announced last week that it earned a mere .76-percent return on its investments, primarily because of a negative 11.71-percent rate of return on international stocks. Other investments, including real estate, bonds, private equity and hedge funds, had positive investment returns.

A year ago TRS reported a 23.6 percent return on its investments. TRS officials say long-term returns are what matters most, not year-to-year returns. They noted that TRS’ 20-year return on investment is 7.73 percent — a figure that is not nearly sufficient to make a dent in the debt, critics say.

During the summer, TRS revised downward its expected rate of return from 8.5 percent to 8 percent, under pressure from government accountability groups that say anticipated rates of return were unrealistic and too exaggerated.

Matalin has been out of touch for years and it obvious that she has no clue about this election.

You should invite her back and ask her to apologize for taking a fee for her appearance this day....

Obamain 2012. Matalin has no clue about the election with her 7 point margin of victory for Mittbain.

Shame on you, Mary.

John, if she is right, will you come back and make an apology? She may be wrong about the 7 points, she may be wrong about Romney winning. But, if she is right about either or both will it mean that you are out of touch? I for one do not like predictions, whether it is for an election or a sporting event, you just never know what will happen.

It's Brazille who is out of touch. When the GOP took over the House in 2010, and Anderson Cooper asked her for a last thought before signing off, all she could say was to congratuate all the new Democrats who won elections.

Really? Nothing about the president needing to work with Republicans, if he wanted to get reelected like Bill Clinton did in 1996? Or dumping Nancy Pelosi as House Democrat leader and finding someone with a sunny disposition?

There was a research during the 70s, trying to make connections between health and personality of human beings. During this test, it was concluded that there are two major groups of people. The first group was concluded to have a type A personality, which labeled them as being more anxious and nervous than other group. They were always in a hurry and rushing through life with their irritable manners, struggling for achievement.Additionally, since you are always on the run, you are easily upset and irritated, sometimes even being rude and hostile towards other people around you. This anxiety may be due to an inability to relax and wait for things to happen on their own and can be the main culprit behind the heart problems these people are likely to suffer from.

Ususally, the undecideds break in favor of the challenger when an incumbent is running. IF that happens here, Romney will win. That's what happened in 1980. Reagan and Carter were very close in the polls throughout the campaign, but in the end, the undecideds broke for Reagan. Most polls have about 4-5% undecided. If they brake Romney's way, he will end up with about 51-52% in most of the real close battleground states. But, like I said, IF.

Metro, The economy is not in the toilet because of President Obama. It has been that way or going that way for quite some time. Let’s talk about "distorting facts", we never really recovered from the 2001 recession, meaning we never regained all of those jobs by the time the Great Recession began in 2007.

There was an interesting article today about a study by two independent economists that go in to the numbers behind the current recovery. Believe it or not, there is a recovery and steady, slow and sure may be the best way. Please read with an open mind, it may shine a light on what's really happening than the campaign rhetoric we normally hear.

Who said this election is just about the ECONOMY or can't you multi-task? Presidents select Supreme Court Justices who have an impact on many issues for a long time since they are in office until they give it up or die and I would prefer to have someone in office that treats women with respect and selects SCJs who have the same mindset. And no, I wasn’t around in the 50’s but I am aware that abortions became legal in 1973 and I don’t believe a woman should have to carry a child of rape or incest unless she chooses to do so.

Stones, sorry if I wasn't clear. The statement is "...his brother, a Republican commissioner of elections, and a conservative Supreme Court?" It is meant to indicate two people and the Court. Of course Jeb Bush was Governor. Kathleen Harris was a staunch Republican and held the office of Secretary of State. She had the final say as to how ballots would be counted and many on both sides questioned her decisions at the time. The elections commissioner was also a Republican.

Since the US Constitution leaves matters regarding elections and voting largely to the States many legal scholars have questioned the role of the Supreme Court in deciding to interject themselves into the matter at all.

But if you don't think that things will continue to degrade under the present administration, then you are out of touch. I am in healthcare and can tell you that there have already been some frightening changes taking place that will just worsen in 2014 if total Obamacare gets pushed through. You may not think that things will change....but are you like the rest off us being squeezed in from all sides (the cost of utilities, food, healthcare, gas, taxes...the list goes on!). Wait till you see the hidden fees pushed on us from this administration (check the requirement of direct deposit with its federal surcharge), it is outrageous! Compare what things cost just 4 years ago (look at the gas cost ...per barrel then & now, we pay less (per barrel) now and way more at the pump!)...most of us are not better off! We gave Obama a chance to change things, but they have not gotten done. Hopefully we can get it right in the next 4 years...our kids future depends on it!

The assumption that Candidate B will succeed because you think Candidate A failed is extremely, extremely misguided.

Not to mention that people on Patch have precisely zero grasp on how gas prices actually work. And since you're against "hidden fees," how about we remove the subsidies that provide you with some of the cheapest gas in the Western world? It will make $4 a gallon seem free in comparison.

Food prices are increasing, again, because we heavily subsidize corn production. As a result, the food system has been turned on its head, and corn is now the basis for many if not most of the foods available. Unless you've been under a rock, you may recall the chronic drought conditions that plagued much of the US for several months this year. Cattle were being fed candy because it was the only corn-based feed that was available at an affordable price in the absence of actual feed corn. If you base your entire country's food system on a monoculture, the prices for food can do nothing but increase in the face of climatic and ecological failure.

Yeah, it's convenient to write off all of the ills of this country on one person, but to do that you have to be deluded enough to think the US exists in a vacuum, isolated from global markets, climatic conditions, and politics.

Bob Loblaw is correct... the US government has very little say in establishing the price of oil or gasoline. They have petroleum reserves they can release, but not much else. Cash & futures market, OPEC, supply/demand, costs of processing/transporting., etc. determine oil/gasoline prices as the wholesale level. And we Americans are spoiled with our relatively low (yes, low!) pump prices -- travel overseas especially to Europe and then complain about $4/gal gas.

I voted for Obama last week end. I consider myself a moderate. I could not bring myself to vote for Romney because he is such a profound flip-flopper. In the 2002 run for Mass Governor, he indicated he was "pro choice"; in 2012 he is saying he is pro-life. As Mass Governor he signed into law mandatory health care; now he is "repeal and replace" whatever that means; he says he is the pro jobs candidate, yet has laid off thousands; his running mate says he is small government, yet voted for the bank bail out plan. Romney says he is for the traditional family, yet in 2002 he supported gay rights. My question to you is this: what does Romney really stand for? Based upon the above track record, you have no way of knowing.

You seem to think that all that is needed to pass a bill is a simple majority. Bzzt! Wrong! Anyone who remembers their fifth grade social studies class knows a bill needs a two-thirds majority in both houses to pass.

Here are some FACTS for you:

1. The recount in Minnesota. Al Franken was not seated in the Senate until July 7th, 2009.

2. Ted Kennedy's illness and death. By the time Franken was seated, Ted was lying on his deathbed. Only Senators on the floor of the Senate chamber are allowed to vote, which only gave the Democrats 59 (one short of the required 60). After Kennedy's death, Deval Patrick appointed a temporary placeholder until a special election could be held in Massachusetts. Then, Congress went home for Christmas.

3. The 2010 special election in Massachusetts. In that special election, the Koch Brothers and Karl Rove avalanched money into Scott Brown's coffers to defeat Martha Coakley because they wanted (figuratively speaking) Ted's skin on their wall.

Here’s just a short list of some of the bills that Republicans have blocked, or attempted to block, since Obama became President:Tax on Companies that ship jobs overseas- A bill that would have eliminated a tax break that companies get when they ship jobs overseas. Republicans blocked this, allowing companies to keep the tax break they receive when they ship jobs to other countries.
Political Ad disclosure bill- Would have required all donors to political campaigns to reveal themselves. Republicans blocked this, not once but twice.
Subpoena Power for the Committee investigating the BP Oil Spill – Give subpoena power to the independent committee responsible for investigating BP’s roll in the oil spill. Republicans attempted to block this. The Small Business Jobs Act -would give LOCAL, community banks access to billions of dollars to loan to small businesses. Republicans blocked
And here’s the bills that Republicans had blocked when we compiled our first .Benefits for Homeless Veterans- Would have expanded benefits to homeless veterans and homeless veterans with children. Republicans blocked this.

Affordable Health Care For America Act- Prevents insurance companies from discriminating against you on the basis of “pre-existing conditions”. Requires that insurance companies spend 85 cents of every dollar that you pay on your actual health care. Limits health insurance companies profit margins. Republicans blocked this for months before it finally passed.
The Jobs Bill- Offsets the payroll tax for 1 year for companies that hire new employees, or people receiving unemployment insurance. Also gives other tax incentives to companies hiring new employees. Republicans attempted to block this.Wall Street Reform- Puts stricter regulations on the banks, preventing them from becoming “too big to fail”. Curbs reckless spending practices that caused the banking crisis. Republicans attempted to block this.
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act- Pumped billions of dollars into state and local Governments to prevent us from sinking into a second Great Depression. Republicans blocked this.Unemployment extension bill HR-4213- Would provide additional aid to the millions of Americans still on unemployment who are just trying to support themselves and their families. Republicans blocked this bill for 8 weeks before it finally passed.Fair Pay Act of 2009- Requires that women receive equal compensation to men for doing the same work. Republicans attempted to block this. FACTS ,IS that intelligent enough for Michael?

Every new acronym. social-problem-fixing enityt that Obama puts in place makes it that much more cumbersome to actually hire someone.

Take it from me - i used to write weekly paychecks for 20 people. Can't do it under this administration. As others have said, get yourself a government job or learn to game the welfare system is you want to survive the next 4 years under Obama

I guess to add to this pissing match, Romney should've won. The election should've stayed on point about the economy. But a funny thing happened. The real Republican agenda came out. If idiot Senators and Congressman could've just kept their mouths shut, it would be over. Now we have idiot hillbilly Congressman wanting to control womens lifes, bomb Iran, let corps run the country, kick out all non-whites. We still have imbeciles calling the POTUS a communist/muslim/socialist and saying he wasn't born hear and wanting to see his school records. They're completely fucking nuts and the thoughts of these cretons running the country should scare the living hell out of us. Fox News is more fair and balanced than any other news organization. Juan Williams, Alan Colmes and Bob Beckel are regular contributors. Several times during the Bush administration CNN would put up graphics saying liar while either the President or Vice President Cheney were on. Every time they said it was an error in their control room. That’s fair and balanced? MSNBC only has one conservative, Morning Joe. In 2010 they would not even allow him to be on air during the Election Night Returns but made continuous fun of Fox for not be fair and balanced like they were. If you don’t like Fox News don’t watch Fox news. Finally, I am a Proud Republican and I can assure you I don’t want America to be a Caste system. I want an America where anyone who works hard has a chance to live the “American Dream.”

Hugh, your class envy is straight out of the Democratic playbook. Ann Romney has never worked a day in her life? I take great offense to that. My wife is a stay at home Mom and I can assure you she works twice as hard as I do. Just because she doesn’t have a job outside of the house doesn’t mean she hasn’t worked a day in her life.
As far as if Romney is elected we will all be working part time jobs just wait until the “Affordable Care Act” becomes fully functional. Darden Restaurants, McDonalds and Wynn Resorts have already said they will cut the number of Full-Time workers in order to cut Health Insurance Costs. Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchise owners were recently told that if they keep their work force the same in 2014 as it is today to expect their profits to be cut in half. Someone who invests several hundred of thousands of dollars to own a business deserves to make a profit. (McDonald’s franchises are over $2M). Just wait we will all be part-time soon enough Hugh.

Liers and cheats will vote often. The IEA and GEA unions are demanding that the Board of Education agree to lie about the final salaries of teachers in our area by spiking the real salaries by 6% in order to provide them with higher pension payouts in retirement.

Do you think for one moment that if they are willing to lie about that, that they will only vote once?

If a teacher earns the 6% raise, great. But having a gun put to your head and demanding it upfront in a "fair negotiation in good faith" is coercion and extortion,

If my early predictions hold out with President Obama being re-elected with over 300 Electoral College votes (popular vote being very close), it will be quite interesting to see what kind of hatred the likes of Vera, G. Ryan, Lou and U.N. Owen will be spewing.

Personally, I can't wait for this election to be over but I'm afraid the aftermath will be worse. I do have to comment on the Obama "dividing" the country and starting the class warfare b.s. The class warfare has been happening since Clinton left office. Obama just finally stood up. Kind of like watching a football game where you don't see the cheap shot that started the melee, but the player that reacts gets the penalty. The Dems have stood aside and said nothing while the middle class shrinks and has rights stripped away. And it was the Mormon cult leader who made the 47% comment. For cripes sake, that was such an inexcusable comment that basically sums up what the Right-wing thinks. And i'm not going out on a limb and saying that an overwhelming majority of Patch readers are part of the "47%". Hell, prolly all readers are but you've been brainwashed into thinking its minorities in the ghetto that "look like" Obama. The KKKarl Roves of the world have been spreading the misinformation and angering whites in an attempt to scare them.

And i have to agree with Stones. Romney may narrowly win the popular vote but Obama should win the EC with just under 300 votes. The fact that Mitts son has something to do with the company that owns the voting machines is scarey but then again, Obama has the full weight of the AG on his side. And as to voter fraud, the Florida "hanging chads" and the b.s. that happened in Ohio in the past is troubling. But the anger won't end. The rise of militias and hate groups is off the charts. The disrespect for the office of POTUS is sad when in a State of the Union, you have a congressman scream out LIAR plus the repub leaders stating their only job is to get Obama out of office, while our country suffers.

Clueless? Stoned...I am not worried as I don't need to move or escape because Americans in the battleground States will remove Oblamer from office. Oblamer could not even fill the arena in Ohio tonight with a free concert with Jay Z and Bruce Springsteen. You need to be worried if your King Oblamer gets reelected as he will be impeached for 4 murderers in Libya!

Mitt personality disorder A, many republicans are BULLIES and Liars, if it don't happen fast enough they just lie. You DONOT WANT A MAN LIKE THIS RUNNING YOUR COUNTRY, he will get us in hotter do do,

It is now time to swear your loyality to our President and the United States of America, or go stand with America's enemies. Start loving it or let us know when you will leave.

As Kerry pointed out it was not decisive. Oh by the way, the republicans still run the house. Can you say partisian lock-up? Sure, I knew you could.

Kerry, the only ones that count are the ones that vote. It's unfortunate that more people vote. What makes you think that if the other 43% voted, the results would be different? It may have made it a landslide, you know, too lazy to vote most likely Obama supporters. BTW, 332 electoral votes, (depending on Florida) is a decisive victory.

I had now problem swearing loyalty to President Bush who I voted for twice. Same as I did for President Clinton even though I didn't vote for him either time. We all should simply respect the office and whoever is our President and hope he foes the best job possible for America.

jaskie1505

8:07 pm on Thursday, November 8, 2012

Obama won a decisive victory because he received a majority of the votes from 100% of the people that really care about this country. Those that didn't vote, don't care about this country or what direction it takes. You cannot count them in your statistics. Let's move on and make continue to make this country great.

Where were you people at when dummyBush was telling lies to get us in two wars and giving tax cuts on the US credit card. In 2008 enough of us were fed up and we elected Obama with hopes of a new direction. Beyond Obama care and the Stimulus, he was obstructed. And its hurt the country. The plan was so that Obama wasn't re-elected. But he was because enough people still want change and don't want to go back to the way things were. Its time for America to pull togather and get the hell out of this mess. Despite our opinion of dummyBush, we put are feeling aside and gave him Carte Blanche to do what he wanted. And what he did was bring us to the brink of another depression. Stop pissing and moaning and listening to the right-wing hate mongers and put America first. Obama isn't going away, nor are the Democrats or minorities. Its a different world and unless we adapt and change we will all parish. Rush, Rove and Faux news won't save you. Laura and Hugh, if you can put aside the invective for a moment, let's try to have a civilized discussion. First of all, I am not concerned about my individual situation -- I have done well enough and will be fine. (Not a one-percenter by any means, but well enough.) My concern is for the next generation that is going to pay the price for my generation's lack of discipline. And by the way Hugh, I have two degrees, one of which is in business, so I am not an economic illiterate. You may be right that we have painted ourselves into such a corner that tax increases may be necessary in the short term, particularly at the state level. But if you are so economically well-versed, you undoubtedly have heard of the Laffer curve. If tax rates increase, tax revenues decrease over the long term. So permanent tax increases are really problematic. And no, I do not want to "protect the rich." I want their money too, only I want them to spend it in the private economy so it will stimulate job growth rather than pay it to the government. Yes, I know that the government will, in turn, spend the tax revenue, and that results in some degree of employment, but it is not as efficient at stimulating growth as increased private sector spending. Tell me where I am wrong. I am not motivated by hate as a lot of you Obama supporters like to think -- I am troubled by the number of people out of work and I want us to do the best thing to solve that problem.

Hey Reds, Blues, Leftys. Rightys, Liberals, Conservatives - get a clue. We can easily go back to 1964 to find the start of this mess. Camelot morphing into Guns and Butter. Read some history, learn from it.

Now - current mess partially Bush's fault - sure. Current mess partially Obama's fault - sure. Just different screwups, in different ways, at different times. Did Obama lie, or did Romney lie? YES, to both, to some degree.

SO let's just agree... that whether you love him or hate him, the President Elect is Obama. Done. Verified.

Has any sort of attempt at REAL progress been effectively gridlocked for 4 years? Yup. And NO MATTER WHO would be sitting in the White House in January, that administration would be digging out from under a big pile of %$#@ for the next 4 years. Some old, some new. Now here's the question - can we ( read as our elected proxys in D.C.) FINALLY put aside the petty partisan BS pissing contests and actually DO SOMETHING? Or must we hang on by our fingernails until 2016 and try again?

After Oblamer attended Occidental College and Columbia University where he had foreign Muslim room mates, Oblamer moved to Chgo to work for the Industrial Areas Foundation, an organization FOUNDED by Marxist and radical agitator "The Red" Saul Alinsky author of Rules for Radicals, who just happened to be the topic of Hitlery Rotten Clinton's thesis at Wellesley College. The Industrial Areas Foundation legal authority rests in a Board of Trustees, which recently includied such notables the late Monsignor John Joseph Egan. IAF's first Board of Trustees included Catholic bishop Bernard James Sheil, Kathryn Lewis (daughter of coal miners union leader John L. Lewis), and philanthropist Marshall Field III.

IAF claims responsibility for the success of the first living wage law in Baltimore in 1994, followed by New York City in 1996.

I take it you are a 20 yr old naive idiot like your King Obama.

Lou, you are an uniformed Republican who thinks he knows something because right wing media tells him it's true. You get your news and "facts" from liars.

The housing bubble and later crisis was not caused by the CRA, but it made a nice scapegoat for the GOP and you fell for their bs again, like you guys always do.

The real problem was deregulation, lack of oversight, and greed, which just happen to be the platform of the GOP.

Was it the CRA who let Wall St. package up the debt from that housing bubble and leverage it at 30-1 odds? Let's see if you can do basic math which most of you conservatives can't. If you make a 30-1 bet on a mortgage, how much does the value have to drop to bankrupt you? If you guessed 3%, you can do math. That is what Bush's Sec let Wall St. do with an overheated mortgage market.

If you think that a few low income mortgages crashed the ENTIRE world economy, you are walking blind without a cane. Bush warned congress. Are you kidding? He had all 3 branches of govt until 2006. He could've and did do anything he wanted. He was the decider. Are you really that slow that you fell for that?

Go back to school and stop thinking that you are smart and can win a debate with anyone repeating GOP talking points. You're not, and you can't.

And for the record. CRA loans were screened unlike the subprime anyone can have a no money down mortgage that Countrywide and other fraudulent lenders gave out. . Less than 5% of the CRA loans defaulted.

It’s a nice story that tries to shift the blame, but like most conservative blame games, it has no basis in fact.

The Blame-CRA theme is a classic rhetoric of conservative reaction.
The evidence strongly suggests the latter. First, consider timing. CRA was enacted in 1977. The sub-prime lending at the heart of the current crisis exploded a full quarter century later. In the mid-1990s, new CRA regulations and a wave of mergers led to a flurry of CRA activity, but, as noted by the New America Foundation's Ellen Seidman (and by Harvard's Joint Center), that activity "largely came to an end by 2001." In late 2004, the Bush administration announced plans to sharply weaken CRA regulations, pulling small and mid-sized banks out from under the law's toughest standards. Yet sub-prime lending continued, and even intensified -- at the very time when activity under CRA had slowed and the law had weakened.

Second, it is hard to blame CRA for the mortgage meltdown when CRA doesn't even apply to most of the loans that are behind it. As the University of Michigan's Michael Barr points out, half of sub-prime loans came from those mortgage companies beyond the reach of CRA. A further 25 to 30 percent came from bank subsidiaries and affiliates, Perhaps one in four sub-prime loans were made by the institutions fully governed by CRA.

Conservatives needed to blame something other than the deregulation they love so much, so they have claimed that the housing crisis is "the direct result of thirty years of government policy that has forced banks to make bad loans to un-creditworthy borrowers." According to them, the culprit is the 1977 Community Reinvestment Act, which requires banks to lend throughout the communities they serve.

"...our intentions were good. If we could help people become invested as property owners, stability and pride of ownership would follow. Not to mention a boon to the economy resulting form all the new housing starts,
In order to write these mortgages, we had to relax the lending standards, of course. It all went very well for awhile, with the new influx of buyers in the market, everyone's property values went up, up, up. And the mortgagees that were having trouble making payments could refi, free up cash from their appreciated home values and be okay. For awhile.

Well, eventually, supply caught up with demand...prices stopped escalating and our subprime borrowers couldn't tap into their ever-rising home values. The defaults started slowly and picked up steam as the artificial real-estate bubble that we created crashed.

There is something called 'the law of unintended consequences' that we all need to be aware of before we try to skew the playing field."

bob,its hopeless to have an intelligent conversation with a bleeding heart lib. i give up. maybe you should do your own research instead of listening to rachel maddow and big ed.you say bush had all control, but never seem to mention all the control obama had his first two years and did NOTHING but the biggest government power in recent history by ruining health care

Lou, What makes Bob a "bleeding heart lib"? It sounds like he's done some research and has a clear understanding of what he's written, including quotes from those in the know.

As opposed to your intelligent "barney fag frank" garbage and G. Ryan, still going with the "Obummer" and "Oblamer" nonsense. The two of you have no sense of reality, only your hatred for President Obama. Which is based on what? How about an honest answer? My guess is neither of you would ever do that.

i must b a racist, i hate most of his policies. is that what u want to hear stones? what the hell are u people in mokena drinking?why arent u guys more like the kennedy democrats when the party made more sense ? they wanted americans to get off their butts and live the american dream and not depend on goverment.now days if your making money and rich your evil.thats what obama breeds. thats where he gets most of his votes.and why u in mokena voted for him, i can only guess your in a union or your just a liberal loon

Lou, I never said you were a racist, just that you hate the President. That is a possibility, though because I know plenty of people who hate just for that reason. You may hate him because he's a Democrat, partisan politics is having that effect on many Americans. A lot of the hate is based on flat out lies that some people take for gospel.

You're off the mark on a few things, I'm not in Mokena, I'm not in a union, I'm not a liberal or a Democrat. This is the first time I have ever voted for a Democratic presidential candidate. For me, he was the better option this time. Mitt Romney just wasn't the answer. He is out of touch with most of the country and never really laid out any of his plan.

And fact of the matter, the President is doing a good job. Not perfect but slowly things are getting better and hopefully both Parties work together to get us where we need to be.

Lou, The whole birther movement is nothing but lies, or that he's a Socialist. Things like that or the Obamaphone nonsense. There are plenty of lies about the Affordable Care Act, aka ObamaCare, things like death panels and additional taxes on the sale of your home. It's funny how it was modeled after RomneyCare and based on principles pushed years ago by the conservative Heritage Foundation, yet now it's a terrible thing.

As far as what he's done right, continuing the TARP program that President Bush started. That helped keep us out of a depression and helped keep GM and others alive. The economy is getting better, slow but growing. Slow may be better to avoid any of the types of "bubbles" that have burst in the past. The dow is about 4500 points higher than when he took office and that's with corporate America sitting on piles of cash.

The decision to kill bin Laden was certainly a good thing as was winding down these wars we can't win because the politicians are making the decisions rather than the Pentagon. As I said earlier, he's not perfect but what President has been.

When do we finally wake up to reality and realize that, for the vast majority of elected officials, the most important priority is not the good of our Country but the need to get re-elected, and that takes a lot of money.

Most get much of that money from people and institutions who have the resources and want something in return. They are the wealthy, the large financial and industrial corporations, and unions. And they are buying laws that favor them so that they can make and keep as much money as possible.

As a result of their success in influencing the political process in the USA our distribution of wealth has changed dramatically in the last fifty years. The wealthy have gained much more, there are many more of us living below the poverty line; the middle class has probably lost the most, both in numbers and in wealth.

Much of this is directly attributable to government policies that have been instituted in the last half century.

It isn't the Republicans. It isn't the Democrats, it is our political system that has evolved to give great "behind the scenes" power to the wealthy.

Neither of our two leading political parties have the interest of the American people at heart. They will simply do whatever they need to do, say whatever they need to say so that they can get elected and gain enough political power to pay back their donors.

And we, who believe them, are the saps.

well stones wether the birther thing is real or not we really dont know for sure, but one things for sure it dosent matter now.and when obama wants to level the playing field and redistribute wealth and have people dependent on government thats a form of socialism.obamaphones are real. it was a program for elderly to have 911 access on home phones, but some democrats decided they should expand the program to cell phones.and of course with any government program it is being abused.and who ends up paying for it, you and i. if u think it isnt real look at your most recent phone bill and u will see a charge u never seen before.i noticed it last month on my office bill.as far as obamacare goes theres some good things but the bad things weigh out the good.they wont call it death panels but if u think an elderly person is gonna get an organ he needs or an expensive operation under this plan your fooling your self.soon this program will get to b too expensive and they will find ways to cut costs. already the government is saying mammograms arent needed til your 50 when it was always 40. this kind of stuff will continue.as far as tarp goes and bailing out gm i didnt agree with it when bush did it and i still dont agree with it.government does not belong in private sector business.thats not what we elected them to do.all that was about was sucking up to the auto workers union.our gov shouldnt decide what companies are worth saving.the economy should b back to normal by now.

Lou, on some of these things, I guess we will have to wait and see. I don't believe any President will ever have the ability to change our way of government into socialism or anything else. As far as birthers, the birth certificates have long been released and certified by the Secretary of State for Hawaii. So we do know that answer, some jus prefer not to believe it.

Obamacare won't change the way healthcare is provided, only access. It's healthcare insurance reform, not healthcare reform. It allows access to insurance to those that can't afford it and yes we are paying for it. But we already were through ER visits, public hospitals like Stroger and unpaid hospital bills which end up in our laps through higher costs.

The mammogram change is based on research, not Obamacare. Too many unneccessary procedures performed with little or no benefit. Hopefully a better way is available to save all these women. I hate the thought of others suffering the way my mom did and several others I know.

My true hope is the doom and gloom people have about the President is wrong and he turns out to be one of our greatest. That benefits all of us. The scary part is, if that were to happen, nearly half the country will still hate him.

stones i didnt vote for him the first time, but when he got elected i too wanted him to b a great president.after all i love america. i thought now we have a black pres and there would b no reason for anyone to think they couldnt b what ever they wanted to b no matter what their skin color was.but,im sorry to say it seems like it had the opposite effect. instead of striving for a better life we have a lot more people wanting more hand outs.i too hope things will get better these next 4 years God bless us all. it dont look good
