Moms Talk Q&A: At What Age Should Your Kids Get a Cell Phone?

Does a 10-year-old really need to be texting day and night?

Cell phone use is a common part of everyday life for many young Americans.

Commercials featuring cell phones advertise family packages with unlimited data for texting and browsing the web. You can’t go to the grocery store or a restaurant nowadays without seeing someone calling, texting or emailing on their mobile device. And while these phones were originally very expensive and inaccessible for children and teens, they have become widely available and acceptable for America’s youth.

Children are taught from a young age to use computers, the internet and various other communication technologies including cell phones. The question is- what age should children be allowed to have their own cell phone? If they have their own phone, should they be allowed to take them to school?
