Oswego Dad Delivers Breeched Baby on I-88
Baby is healthy thanks to Oswego dad Chad Martinez’s actions last Friday.
Oswego resident and mother Megan Martinez said she used to make fun of people who had babies en route to the hospital because she never understood how they couldn’t make it there in time.
Then it happened to her.
Martinez’s water broke around 7:30 a.m. on Friday morning, according to ABC 7 News, and soon her contractions were just a minute and a half apart.
Martinez said her husband, Chad, an Illinois State Trooper, helped her to the car where they began their drive to their hospital in Downers Grove.
“When we got to Naperville road and I-88, I told him that there's a foot hanging out, and he didn't believe me,” Martinez told ABC 7. “And I reached, and there were toes. And I'm like Chad, there are toes.”
They pulled the car over on I-88 and a few minutes later little Maci was born, but with her umbilical cord wrapped twice around her neck.
“At that point, immediately training just kicked in," Chad Martinez told ABC 7. "I had to improvise by removing the mucous from the airway, and I actually had to do that by mouth."
He was able to revive Maci and an ambulance soon arrived to take mom, dad, Maci and the couple’s 21-month-year-old daughter Ava to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, according to ABC 7.
The Martinez family told ABC 7 that Maci is the best gift they have gotten this Christmas.
