Reception Tonight for New District 308 Superintendent

Come meet Matthew Wendt tonight before the school board meeting at Oswego East High School.

You’ve been reading about him. Now’s your chance to meet him.

Tonight, the Oswego School District will host a reception for new superintendent Matthew Wendt, and you’re invited. The meet-and-greet runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Oswego East High School, directly before the school board meeting.

Last month, the board voted to approve a three-year contract with Wendt to replace outgoing superintendent Dan O’Donnell. O’Donnell’s last day will be June 30, and Wendt’s first will be July 1.

Wendt’s contract guarantees him a base salary of $225,000 a year, plus benefits, and the board has the option to increase that figure for the contract’s last two years. That’s less than the $235,000 initially suggested by the district’s search firm, Ray and Associates, but an increase over O’Donnell’s salary – he was paid $200,000 for the 2011-2012 school year.

Wendt is currently the superintendent of the Ankeny School District in Iowa, which has faced many of the same issues as District 308. As reported by Ankeny Patch, Wendt was offered a new three-year deal to stay in Ankeny, but declined. He accepted a negotiated $176,000 payout as a transitional allowance.

But some members of the Ankeny School Board reportedly asked for that transitional money back, once news broke of Wendt’s new job with District 308. Wendt provided a written statement to Iowa TV station KCCI, and you can read that statement here.

Following the reception, the District 308 board will hold its regular meeting, at which members will discuss a potential new location for graduation ceremonies for the 2012-2013 school year. The meeting begins at 7 p.m., and is open to the public.

Why are we using Ray and Associates to procure our candidates? Sure we've used them before but they haven't got the best references and seem to be ratcheting up the salaries each time we use them. They just procured a candidate that will cost the taxpayers more in salary and benefits than the Secretary of State earns. Ray and Associates are "suggesting" the salary ranges? Duh.....! They get paid based upon their candidates salary, don't they?
Mr Wendt will have one heck of a transition period with all the problems and disagreements in this district. So...what happens if he doesn't work out? Do we have to pay him anyway? Are we going to have to pay him if he decides to quit and go elsewhere? IS HE REALLY WORTH A QUARTER MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR PLUS?
So far, some of the press from his previous district is not very flattering towards him as an administrator and there leaves some questions regarding his integrity. I sincerely hope that Mr. Wendt truly does work out well here in this district. However, as the average length of service for a Supt in Illinois is a mere 3 years, I would not be surprised to see the musical chairs game played again in 2015.

At least there is the $10,000 savings from what Ray and Assoc. suggested for Wendt's salary. And, they, Ray and assoc., consider that salary to be "mid-level" regarding superintendent's salaries, apparently comparing nation-wide. Most of us would cringe to see that figure for a "top level" payout-wow! What has happened is, well, we know- needing search firms, and they seem to rule where our superintendents go, while keeping top candidates in their pool-not right, maybe, but the way it is for growing schools. This firm was good possibly only in that they found Wendt for his latest district. Facing many of the same problems on a smaller scale, he choose to leave, before all was done. Hopefully he can bring positive changes for Oswego 308, as he helped his old district to do.

Hey Russ - lets give the guy a chance and not run him off like we have with so many other people. This is the board that people wanted(for those who voted anyway) - this is what we have to work with. And yes, it is obvious this is what we must pay if you want someone qualified to run a growing district. We had a good Superintendent that we were PAYING LESS and we ran him off. I sadly get the impression that peope would be happy having someone in place with no qualifications while paying them $50,000. Yet people would still find something to complain about. But this is nothing compared to when it will be realized that we will still need to build a third high school soon and it will cost even MORE MONEY to do so. I could have told you that for FREE....

>>"And yes, it is obvious this is what we must pay if you want someone qualified to >>run a growing district."
huh ? on Ray and Associates *own web site* there were other superintendent positions up for less with more kids in it. This is them: http://rayassoc.com/job-details.php?ID=136 this is us: http://rayassoc.com/job-details.php?ID=144.
Here's one close to our size: http://rayassoc.com/job-details.php?ID=137 how come *we* have to pay almost twice the going rate ? are you saying these other superintendents are *not* quality ?.

Rarely do people in high level positions just up and leave without a back-up plan. If you are negotiating for an exit, you can probably bet that neither party is showing their full hand. He wanted his severance, they wanted him gone. It wasn't all love and roses, and now people are upset that he already (essentially) had a deal in hand.

Seriously, did anyone really believe he was going say, "Aw, shucks. You're right. You keep that money and swing by and see me if you're ever in Oswego, IL!"

Please

As for giving him a chance - is there really another option? lol

Brian what is the point you are making here - as the article states "Ankeny Superintendent Matthew Wendt intends to accept the $176,000 severance package approved by the board last week, despite calls for him to decline the money." Why should he give it back, what does it have to do with taking the job here, what does it have to do with anything. Why do we qualify people who have other approved financial arragments that are valid and legal??????? This is a criteria for hiring someone???? If he won the lottery would you have a problem with it.... Jane as far as giving him a chance, sadly there are people(as above) that have issues with him already that dont even have anything to do with the job and he isnt even here yet for crying out loud and the school year has not even started.

I know, David. The whole thing is unsavory, but unsavory things happen all the time. Nothing new there. I wouldn't get too worked up because like Russ points out, there is quite a bit of turnover in these positions. It used to be that a classroom teacher worked his or her way up and stayed in the same district until retirement. That changed quite a while ago. Administrators from the building on up move around all the time. That's pretty much the norm, not the sky falling.

The guy apparently knows how to make a buck - let's hope he also knows how to recommend that they are spent wisely.

Good luck with that 3rd H.S. and getting any money through another referendum. I've had my fill of taxes and trying to keep a float. Maybe the extra $50,000.00 should have been put into a fund for future building instead of pant pockets. This district is so out of control with reality and when we all get next years tax bill it'll become doomsday for many. We'll see who changes their mind with this salary after they're asked to pay double their share when many bail-out and just walk away from their homes.

Dave, I agree that his financial negotiations were legal. However, when looking for a new superintendent I would like to see a community (Ankeny) sad that they are loosing a great educational leader. Instead he was paid to leave. Is this what we want for our community? I guess the point I am trying to make here is that I’m not impressed and that first impressions are usually right. If Dr. Wendt won the lottery by playing a scratch off or lotto type game, congratulations to him. But I guess he did win a $176,000 lottery at the expense of taxpayers of Ankeny. Dave, I cannot believe that if this happened in our school district that you would be supportive just because it was valid and legal.

Brian- half the community was sad to see him leave. It was a political vote to get rid of the board because of a debate about two high schools. He was the fallout and he got battle pay. OUR taxes are too high because the board and sup should have just said no and let class sizes go up instead of building all of the buildings. What is wrong with portables anyway? A good teacher can teach anywhere. Why waste the tax money? But the old board and Wendt were afraid to have 35 kids in a room together and the teachers cried that it was tooooo much so we get to be taxed so they can live their sheltered 1.2 kid per family life. Wendt was very articulate and very smart. Now the new politicians ran him out so they could have a power run. I thought great.... they wont spend the money.... but they are doing it all over again and now want a couple of bonds to fund THEIR SHOW and we will run another sup out like we did the last 3.

Under Dr. Wendt's tenure in Ankeny, school district property taxes rose to the highest levels ever seen. Instead of spending tax money on school buildings and teacher salaries, outrageous amounts of money were spent on things like artificial turf practice fields (over $1 million), bus garages, field lights and bathrooms at the football stadium, and other athletic programs. Now that Dr. Wendt and the school board have spent all the money, they are asking the community to pass a bond referendum (allow the district to borrow even more money) to build a new elementary school. Tax and spend has been and continues to be a huge problem in the Ankeny school district.

God, we cannot wait to get out of here (Oswego and Illinois). Just so sick and tired of all the flagrant spending of our money. Lots do like that though (Democrats mostly, and those on the education cash merry go round). For those.. c'mon over and move to Oswego. We have some beautiful properties for sale.. cheap!

From all the articles I've read it appears that his severance package was negotiated in bad faith. The board was not aware that he already had a new job lined up. Obviously, if he would have disclosed that to them then they would have never agreed to the large severance amount that was intended to assist him during his time of unemployment that never ocurred.

Is this the best that our District can do for a new Admin? They couldn't find someone without a controversial past?

I have heard for a fact that it was negotiated and our board knew. The political fallout was too much and now they are back tracking. Sad little politicians we have here in Ankeny.

I read those Des Moines Register articles...Dr. Wendt seems sneaky - that is my first impression of him. I hope he proves me wrong.

I'm tired of hearing that we are "in the middle" or "in the lower tier" of what other districts pay. That seems to indicate that we need to start paying more to attract goo people. So lets flip that theory around. Starting pay for a brand new teacher in Chicago Public Schools with a BA/BS degree is $51,000 a year. What is it here in district 308? $32K? $38K? It sure isn't $51K so how about we raise the starting pay immediately? Obviously we can't since it's supported by property tax revenue but it is interesting to think we NEED to pay managers and people who claim to have the latest and greatest ideas absolute top dollar and that we can get by with the people actually working with the kids on a daily basis, the ones who actually try and implement the latest and greatest ideas as little as possible.

As a seven generation member of Ankeny and a sixth generation of my family attending Ankeny Schools I will tell you all a story about Matt Wendt. I urge you all to read John Carlson,s "The audacious Wendt played us for suckers" in the DM Reg. Because of my long ties to the Ankeny community Matt and I had several meetings at his office and two such meetings with my wife and myself. Matt was using me to find out feelings in the community and I used him to find out what was going on so it worked for both of us. Matt and I always had a pact that what was said at the meetings would go no further than his door. When I disagreed with the opening of a second high school I was a thorn in his side as many people who know me believed what I was saying. We defeated a bond issue to let him know what we thought of his ideas and spending which has never been done in this town. I recently wrote a letter to the editor of the Ankeny Press Citizen asking him to PLEASE give back the $176,000.00 to my great grandchildren, grades first grade (2) and second grade (1) so they may have improvements to their schools, if needed. Or so we may hire a couple of teachers perhaps. He always stated, "we're doing these things for the good of the students", is that why he hood winked the school board in getting $176,000.00 when he already had a job at your school. What a scoundrel and dishonest person. He said he needed the money to send his boy to school. HaHa Joe Morr Class of 1954

Sounds like a perfect fit for Oswego District 308....if you think I'm wrong...take a LONG hard look...follow the money....from Dr.Plank up to now. Maybe O'Donnell left because he couldn't find an angle to work like these others do. Oh yeah....he was collecting a 6 figure pension from an other district.....Maybe all our people who are leaving the district are leaving not so much because of the board but maybe they know or have heard of Wednt and are bailing out rather than work for the guy.
Oh....Mr. New Superintendent....my sone needs to go to college too...can you hire me so I can negotiate a package and quit then take a job down the road like you?

Joe, Thanks for the info on Dr.Wendt. I too agree that no-one should take money from a school district that they have not earned. It is a falsehood for administrators to constantly use the statement, "It is for the children", and then demand large salaries and payouts for themselves, beause the money for both come from the Education Fund.

The Des Moines Register article you refered can be read using the following link.
