Clothing Retailer Moving Into Former Circuit City Location
Ross Dress for Less plans to spend $800,000 on improving the space.
The retail space that once was home to Circuit City in Oswego has a new tenant.
Discount clothing retailer Ross Dress for Less has signed a lease agreement with Inland Western Retail Real Estate Trust to locate its 13th Chicago-area store in the space that has sat virtually empty since Circuit City closed its doors in 2009, according to Inland.
Crain’s Chicago Business reported in December that the 23,000-square-foot space will undergo $800,0000 in construction improvements.
The chain is one of the largest discount retailers in the country, with more than 1,000 stores in 27 states, according to the Ross website. Ross opened 12 stores in the Chicago suburbs last fall, creating about 600 jobs.
The closest location to Oswego is on Route 59 in Naperville in the same shopping center as Jo-Ann Fabric and Burlington Coat Factory. Ross also opened in Algonquin, Arlington Heights, Bloomingdale, Crystal Lake, Matteson, Niles, Orland Park, Rockford, Schaumburg, Skokie and South Elgin.
Ross will open another store in Gurnee in conjunction with the Oswego opening.
“Ross Dress for Less will be a strong addition to these two high-quality assets,” said Maria Pope Toliopoulos, vice president and director of leasing for Inland Western. “We are pleased to expand our long-standing relationship with a great retail partner and welcome Ross Dress for Less to these two new locations.”
Headquartered in Pleasanton, CA, Ross had fiscal 2010 revenues of $7.9 billion, according to its website. The stores offer name brand and designer apparel, accessories, footwear and home décor at savings of 20 percent to 60 percent off department and specialty store regular prices.

I think a Binnys the size of Lowes space would be great.

I would like to see a Trader Joe's or a Whole Foods Market somewhere in one of these empty store fronts. Or what about a kid friendly, family place. Chuck Cheese anyone

When more stores started going in on Rt 34, I sent a message to Trader Joe's customer service suggesting they open up a store in Oswego. They said they had no plans to open one up in our area in the near future ... ... I would love to see one closer than downtown Naperville or Geneva. Of course, Binny's would be a welcome addition. :)

Whole Foods or Binny's would definitely have been better. We have enough clothing stores around here.

A Trader Joe's would have been nice, but I wonder how many grocery stores this can really support.

Would someone mind telling me what Binny's is. I would have liked to seen a Trader Joe's but anything to help with the taxes is fine by me.

Binny's is a liquor store. I'm excited to see this new store! Sounds like a nice addition and it's great for everyone who is always preaching about shopping locally. Here's another nice option for a variety of products. Welcome!

Thanks Jane. That would have been a very large liquor store and since I really don't drink there would have been no need for me to visit. I have gone to Ross on 59 and have found a few things for my boys. When you have young men with a 14 and 15 size shoe your choices are limited not to mention expensive. I have found them shoes for under $100 which is a hard thing to do. This retailer should draw in people from out west which is a good thing for us all. Anything we can do to help out the schools is good news indeed.

From their website, they sound like another version of T.J. Maxx? I welcome pretty much anything to fill in that big empty store!

Hmm 5-6 votes for a liquor store. Is there that much demand for booze in this town?
I'm just glad to see the place being leased and put back into the tax rolls.

Don't think there is that much "demand for booze" in Oswego, but everybody likes to see different types of retailers around. Binny's is a very successful retailer (and one of the largest) of different liquors, fine wines, etc. Sometimes it's just nice to have a better place to go to if you are looking for something special that you just can't find at Walmart. I do agree that anything that puts that large empty space back on the tax roll is a good thing :)

I'm sure the owner of the shopping center is paying the taxes on the space in the absense of the tenant. It will bring in more taxes from sales but overall this area should be a good fit for a Ross store.
