The Queen's Jubilee: Mom Talk

How the pomp and circumstance of all things royal hit home right here in Chicagoland.

Watching the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, I realized I'm a Royals junkie. I love watching everything about them. Of course, it was Diana who got me hooked. Still, the Queen of England is certainly a fascinating woman.

It all started when Lady Di's carriage clip-clopped across my TV screen. Her wedding gown oozed out like frosting. She totally charmed me with her shyness. I dreamed about having a fairytale wedding like hers. Ever loyal, I hated Charles when they were divorced. I blamed the Queen, too.

Then when Diana died, my heart broke. I wanted to reach out and hug those young princes as if to say, "Don't worry Diana, we will help take care of your boys for you." I realize how absurd that sounds. I wasn't a mom then, but I still felt so attached to the situation.

Two days later, we lost Mother Theresa, another mother-hero. I ached. It seemed like a whole week passed with me in tears on the sofa watching funerals far away.

Now that I am a mother, my second-biggest worry (after keeping my kids safe) is keeping us, their parents, safe. I hold my breath as my husband does dangerous jobs around the house. And yes, I even have learned to slow down as I drive. I know, I know, shocking but true. The thought of orphaning my own children has forced extreme measures. I think of Diana and ease up a little on the gas.

As if my opinion mattered, I forgave Charles and the Queen over time. I accept Camilla, and yes, I've even come to like her hats. I credit Helen Mirren's acting in The Queen, and yummy Colin Firth in The King's Speech for this paradigm shift. I don't care if these movies are accurate. They made me like the unlikable royals.

Admiring the queen is especially peculiar since it offends my Irish sensibilities. I justify it though, because I still have no use for Maggie Thatcher.

So when William and Kate were married, I wanted to watch the whole show. I felt like they were close friends.

Now, I often find myself flipping to late night documentaries on Harry or Margaret. I had to watch the Queen's Jubilee. I don't care who you are, 60 years of dedication to anything deserves a flotilla.

I'm a junkie. I can't get the Royals monkey off my back. I think I'll go make a cup of tea.
