About this column:
Huddle Up is a weekly column by Patch contributor and Oswego resident Natalie Stevens following the world of fantasy football.Football is wrapping up its ninth week and it’s time to ask yourself if your team has a chance of making the playoffs. If you have a record right now of 8 – 1 or 7 –2 you should be a shoo in, but I suppose that all depends on what the rest of your league has been doing. So, if you are going to the playoffs, or at least are still in the running, it’s time to begin preparing for a whole new season. Because it really is like a new season. If you’re far enough long that you can breathe a sigh of relief, kick back and not cry when your QB throws five interceptions, it’s then time to start worrying …
Let’s have a show of hands. How many of you have:A. A player on your bench who should have been active last week?B. A player who has suffered an injury and destroyed your chance of winning last week?C. A player who just did not do what they’re supposed to and failed you during week 7?Or, if you’re like me, do you have a combination of the three? Yeah, it seems like it’s just been one of those games. And with such an unpredictable crowd, who on earth are you supposed to be playing? Good question. Does anyone have an answer?I suppose this is why they call it “fantasy” football, because we all …
It’s the start of week six and in the fantasy football world that means one thing: bye weeks are starting to make their move. Wave good-bye to all your favorite players, and then start panicking if you haven’t found anyone to fill those empty spots. If you just realized/haven’t bothered to make sure you have your best active line-up possible, here’s the steps to ensure you don’t get massacred this week and the following. One: Take a deep breath and repeat aloud that you’ll be fine. Who cares if all three of your top receivers are on bye this week, somehow you’re going to win. Two: Look at your …
I’m going to make an assumption and say that everyone reading this watched the Bears vs. Packers game Sunday. And I’m going to guess that all Bears fans cried “foul” when the referee made that phantom holding call during Johnny Knox’s punt return for a touchdown. Despite the fact the Bears did lose because of it, I breathed a sigh of relief. My opponent had the Bears defense and with that touchdown return I would have lost. That brings me to the this week’s piece of advice: invest in a good defense. But don’t just go and pick the best-rated one off the charts. Those experts can spin …
Two weeks into the football season and we’re all starting to see which teams are dominating and which are struggling. Fortunately for me, many of my players are on those teams dominating, and I managed to win this week. Congrats to me, and all of you, who did not fall to 0–2. But that doesn’t mean those of us who won escaped unscathed. Miles Austin is out for a few weeks, Jamaal Charles is done for the season and Michael Vick is out with a concussion. It was another rough weekend for injuries. What this means is it’s now time to start trading. Free agents are fine and dandy, but if there’s no …
After week one, half of us are bragging about our amazing team and the other half of us asking “why?” to the fantasy gods. Those fantasy gods pitted me against the lethal combination of Tom Brady and Wes Welker and their 99-yard touchdown pass. I think you know who went to bed early. But don’t give up hope. After losing week one last year I went on to a season record of 10-3. Anything’s possible. And if nothing seems to be working, call the Buffalo Wild Wings guy and have him help you out. However, to legally make sure you don’t end up with the even more dreaded 0-2 start; let’s examine our …
This Thursday is the opening kick-off for the NFL season. All the players will be doing their thing, coaches yelling orders, fans screaming and refs tossing flags for every little hold and false start. But there’s one group of people that are just as much a part of the football season as any of those. You, the fantasy football players.Amid our nail biting and hair pulling all spring and summer as we worried about the NFL’s fate from the lockout, we were still in the process of ranking our players, looking at proposed match-ups and doing mock-drafts. Lots and lots of mock-drafts. And now the …
