Girl Scouts to Offer Engineering Program for Girls!

Girls to learn hands-on environmental engineering skills by cleaning up an oil spill and delve into green engineering practices at Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois' upcoming Engineer This! program.

Girls will learn hands-on environmental engineering skills by cleaning up an oil spill and delve into green engineering practices at Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois’ upcoming Engineer This! program. Designed especially for girls in grades 6–8, the program is March 25–28, 9:15 a.m.–3:45 p.m., at Camp Dean in Big Rock. Cost is $20 per registered Girl Scout; $32 per non-registered Girl Scout and includes lunches, snacks, program supplies, and field trip transportation. Financial assistance is available. Registration deadline is March 4.

During the workshop, girls will visit the Peggy Notebaert Museum where they’ll discover the power of wind by building and testing a wind turbine. The girls will then alter the design to observe how change affects the turbine’s performance. Participants will experiment with Newton’s Law of Motion by designing, building, and launching simple rockets. Other activities include designing future products, extracting DNA, and creating electrical circuits by building a switch-operated buzzer system.

To register, visit http://www.girlscoutsni.org/event.html. For information, contact Pam Schnecke at 847-741-5521, Ext. 7140, or pschnecke@girlscoutsni.org. This program is provided through funding from Fox Valley United Way and open to all girls, grades 6–8, in the communities of Aurora, Big Rock, Bristol, Hinckley, Little Rock, Millbrook, Montgomery, Mooseheart, North Aurora, Oswego, Plano, Plattville, Sandwich, Sugar Grove, and Yorkville.
