Community Garden Plots Taking Seed April 1

Get your plot of land for $20 for 400 square feet.

A garden is a friend you can visit anytime.

For those who love to dig, plant, water, weed, and sojourn with the sunshine but lack the yard space, the Oswegoland Park District has a little plot. It’s literally a little plot, yours for the renting, in the Community Gardens behind South Point.

The Community Gardens were created last spring in response to residents' requests. The first year was met with tremendous enthusiasm but trying soil conditions and poor drainage led to some abandoned tomatoes and cranky cucumbers.

The Park District has turned those challenges into opportunities this season, and has tilled organic compost into the entire garden, created wood chipped paths, improved drainage, and added a community message board so that you can share your successful gardening tips or comment on your neighbor’s expertise. Cool beans!

The price for plot rental you ask? Well, we made it so simple that the preschoolers at South Point could remember it. A 20’x 20’ is $20, and a 10’x 10’ is? You guessed it.  And yes, that’s for the entire season. Nonresidents pay slightly more. Plots open for gardening on April 1. There are 120 plots available and rental is in progress. Lettuce remind you not to wait too long if you want one.  At this price, they are going like hot potatoes.
