Community-Wide Reading Program Focuses on Civil War

'All Other Nights' featured during annual program.

Fox Valley Reads is a partnership among five libraries in the Fox Valley corridor in Northern Illinois.

This is the sixth year that Oswego libraries have participated in this community-wide reading initiative. Along with the Aurora Public Library, the Big Rock Library, the Messenger Public Library of North Aurora and the Sugar Grove Public Library, we are commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with a variety of programs, tours and book discussions from Oct. 2 to 30.

Although registration is preferred, drop-ins are always welcome. Program brochures are available at both the Montgomery and Oswego campuses. For additional information, visit the Fox Valley Reads website at www.foxvalleyreads.org.

An Afternoon with Author Dara Horn

Don’t miss your chance to meet the author of the Fox Valley Reads book All Other Nights. Dara Horn will appear from 2 to 5 p.m. Sun., Oct. 2 at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, 1500 W. Sullivan Road in Aurora.

Ms. Horn will discuss her research into the Civil War and how she used it to write All Other Nights. There will bea book sale and signing following the presentation.

Book Discussions

The library welcomes everyone to meet and discuss All Other Nights and the Civil War. Join us on the following dates; no registration is required. Oct. 4 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Montgomery Campus.Oct. 6 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Oswego Campus, Oct. 13 from 1-2 p.m. at the Oswego Campus.

An Evening with Harriet Beecher Stowe

Paddy Lynn returns to the library to portray Harriet Beecher Stowe, the abolitionist from New England, who Abraham Lincoln referred to as “the little lady who started this bigwar”. Join us on Tue., Oct. 11 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Montgomery campus. (THIS IS A CORRECTION FROM THE DATE LISTED ON THE PROGRAM BROCHURE.)

Letters of the Civil War

Join us on Mon., Oct. 24 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Montgomery campus as historical interpreters Rebecca Tulloch and Phil Lauricella read excerpts from original letters written by Union and Confederate soldiers. The reading will be accompanied by music, period photographs and historical re-enactment video footage.
