Oswego Musician Trying Out for 'America's Got Talent'

Adam Cates, a Christian singer/song-writer, visited Indiana over the weekend to try out for the hit NBC show.

An Oswego resident and musician is trying to show America that he's "got talent."

Adam Cates, a self-described Christian singer/songwriter, husband and father of two, went to Indianapolis on Jan. 25 to try out for the hit NBC show "America's Got Talent."

"There were thousands of people there and the producers think it was the largest turnout for any of their events. It was a crazy experience!" said Cates.

Those that advance to the next round will hear the good news sometime in April, said Cates, as AGT still has several audition stops to make.

"I think it went well," said Cates. "I didn’t forget any words and played the guitar part well."

"The whole experience was amazing."

Cates, singing under the band name Adam Allen Cates, describes his song as "music with a message."

He was formerly an undercover narcotics cop for eight years, but felt that God was calling him to work in ministry, which led him to a career in music.

While waiting for his chance to audition for AGT, Cates was interviewed by Indianapolis station Channel 13 News, which you can see starting at the 1:10 mark in the video above.

As he told the interviewer, this is actually the first time he's tried out for anything. He's been performing since he picked up a guitar in 2007 and taught himself to play.

"Go out there and give it a try. The worst they're going to say is say 'no', and you'll still be able to do what you want to do."
