Halloween costumes can take a lot of planning, mending, crazy last-minute searching with a lot of laughs and tears all rolled up to create the most amazing costume ever.
But do you ever actually take a picture of all that hard work?
Now you can get a professional photo and help a local charitable organization at the same time.
Oswego photographer Julie Mettler, owner of Mettler Portraits, is hosting her annual Halloween Charity Bash to benefit the Kendall County Food Pantry.
A donation of canned goods, plus an appointment time, will result in a free 4”x6” photograph. Mettler said her only requirement is that everyone needs to be in costume.
This is the fourth year that Mettler has offered a session for a free Halloween photograph.
“Most people would never think to have their kids’ pictures taken in their Halloween costumes,” said Mettler. “Plus it’s my way of seeing all my favorite kids dressed up for Halloween.”
Metter said she’s has known many of her clients since their kids were infants, and when they were younger they were in for photos all the time. But as they grew up she started to see them only once a year and thought this would be a fun way to see them all and reconnect with the families.
The idea of the donation to the food pantry Mettler said really came when she went to see a photographer give a speech a couple of years ago about giving back to the community. “It really touched me. I wanted to do something for others.”
A donation is required, but Mettler said people who come in with bags and boxes full of canned goods have pleasantly surprised her. “We have a lot of very generous people.”
Her goal for the food drive is always to beat the one from the year before. In 2011 Metler collected 26 bags and boxes of food.
The free photography session is for Saturday, Oct. 27 and if enough people are interested, Mettler plans to also offer photographs on Sunday, Oct. 28.
Mettler wanted to give a shout out to local businesses Meijer and Home Depot for their support in constructing the set. Home Depot has given her a $25 giftcard for supplies, and Meijer last year “was amazing” and donated a ton of pumpkins plus cornstalks and haybales. There were so many pumpkins, Mettler said, that each child got to take one home after the photo session.
