Plano Gears Up For "Man of Steel" Premiere

The new movie “Man of Steel” comes out this Friday, June 14th. This is exciting news for fans of Superman, but even more exciting for residents of Plano.

The city of Plano has the honor of being Clark Kent’s hometown, Smallville, in the film. Other locations in the Chicagoland area are also featured in the film, including the city of Chicago as Metropolis. Many local residents also appear as extras in the film.

In 2011, the downtown area of Plano was completely transformed into the town of Smallville. Existing storefronts were modified and entirely new buildings were constructed for the filming of the movie. Before production began, Plano Mayor Bob Hausler made a proclamation to re-name the city to Smallville during filming of the movie.

Residents of Plano take great pride in being Smallville. To celebrate the release of the movie, Plano is hosting a midnight “Man of Steel” screening this Thursday, June 13th, at WOW Cinema 7 in Sandwich. The screening will feature some special “extras” from the film.

On Saturday, June 15th, Plano will debut their new Smallville Museum. The museum is inside the Plano train depot, which was featured as the Smallville Town Hall during filming of the movie. The museum features items used during filming of the movie, including props and pieces of buildings, as well as photographs taken during production of the movie.

Later this summer, Plano will host their second annual Smallville Superfest on August 16th, 17th, and 18th. The festival is free to the public and will feature activities, games, food, vendors, music, and a parade.
