Prevent Flooding, Check Your Sump Pump

Oswego salt trucks were out on the roads very early Saturday for de-icing.

Snow can be exhausting, but flooding is most definitely worse.

Oswego was hit by freezing rain from Friday afternoon through early Saturday, which prevented salt from sticking on the icy roadways.

Jennifer Hughes, Director of Public Works, said Village trucks were salting the roads as of 4 a.m. Saturday and that roads are now clear, although there may be a few slick spots.

Water is receding from the roadways, however there may still be spots of standing water due to the melting snow.

Which leads to the next problem: flooding.

"Residents should check their sump pumps to ensure that they continue to work properly," said Hughes.  "In addition, they should safely remove any icicles that build up on gutters."

Make sure sump pumps are fully connected and the pipes are facing away from your foundation.

If you are able to safely, also clear out the area around the storm drains so melting snow can recede.
