Record-breaking number of runners, walkers at downtown Oswego 5K.

The third annual Steps Toward a Brighter Future 5K attracted a record-breaking number of participants on Sunday, with 300 registered racers, according to Celebrate Differences founder and president Rebecca Christiansen.

Held in downtown Oswego, the 5K benefits the non-profit, which supports individuals with disabilities and their families.

Christiansen expressed gratitude to the runners, walkers, volunteers and sponsors who came out despite Sunday's chilly weather.

This year's overall male and female winners are both Oswego residents, Christiansen said.

First-place male overall medalist Dwight Nelson crossed the finish line at 18 minutes and 41 seconds. Isabelle Christiansen was the overall first-place female medalist with a time of 21 minutes and 54 seconds.

The event included a 50/50 raffle and an array of activities for walkers, runners and spectators. Musical entertainment was provided by 95.9 The River and Oswego's Firehouse Pizza & Pub hosted a post-race party for participants.

Additional 5K sponsors included Knutte & Associates, Road Runner Sports, Thrivent Financial Chicagoland Financial Associates, Law Elder Law, Pet Supplies Plus and Walgreens (Oswego). Michele Zappa of Zappa Studios donated photography services.
