Storm Blog: Get the Latest News on Today's Winter Weather

We'll update this blog throughout the day with weather, road reports and cancellations.

Update 5:50 p.m. As of 5:20 p.m., all District 308 students had been picked up, Angie Smith, ’s director of business services

Update 3:40 p.m. The Oswego YMCA will remain open until 9 p.m. tonight. Does that mean no excuses?

Update 3:35 p.m. Both branches of the Oswego Public Library District will close today at 5 p.m. Normal closing for a Friday is 9 p.m.

Update 2:55 p.m. A reminder of the village's snow ordinances from the village web site:

1. ON STREET PARKING: Ordinance No.02-72. It shall be unlawful to leave unattended, or park any motor vehicle upon any Village Street when there has accumulated upon any streets two inches (2”) or more of snow. This prohibition shall remain in effect until such time as the street has been plowed, the snow has been removed there from, or the snowfall has stopped.

2. DEPOSITS ON STREETS:
Ordinance No.04-02. It shall be unlawful to deposit snow onto the streets while removing snow from resident driveways and sidewalks.

Update: 2:45 p.m. District 308 students without a parent at the bus stop will be taken back to the District Administration Center, not the school, as previously reported.

Update 2:33 p.m.

Angie Smith,  ’s director of business services, said junior high students on buses will be released from schools as their buses arrive this afternoon in an effort to keep elementary students as close to their usual drop-off times as possible. She said elementary school children will not be dropped off before their normal times. If parents who normally pick up their children are stuck in traffic and can't make the drop-off time, the bus will make another loop of its route. If parents still aren't there, students will be taken back to the District Administration Center.

1:30 p.m.

From Kendall Area Transit: Unfortunately, due to safety concerns, KAT will be scaling back services for the rest of the day. We will still pick up our riders to take them home as close to the original time scheduled as possible. However, we will be cancelling all other rides. We apologize for any inconvenience, but the weather has become extremely dangerous. If you have any questions, please call KAT office 630-882-6970.

12:50 p.m.

Village Public Works Director Jerry Weaver reports that crews are out in full force plowing and salting as the heavy snow continues. All roads are passable at this time, he said.

Private contractors hired to plow some of the village's cul-de-sacs will be out later this afternoon with the same plan of attack as last week's storm. Weaver said the cul-de-sac plan worked well last week with only some minor issues needing to be addressed.

11:40 a.m.

Kids Connection will be open as scheduled this afternoon. Other Park District programs that are held in District 308 schools will be canceled for this evening. All other park district activities have not been canceled.

11:30 a.m.

The Landing teen ministry at has been canceled for tonight.

11:15 a.m.

All after-school activities have been canceled for Friday, and the high schools will dismiss one hour early to allow for the on-time bus service for the junior high and elementary school children, according to District 308 communications director Kristine Liptrot.

I live on a cul-de-sac and we did not see a plow until 5:50 PM this evening. Really, not until 5:50 PM! Then, there was so much snow, the pick up truck he was driving, with no salter attached, was sliding all over the place as he was trying to plow! This is unacceptable and I will be calling tomorrow. Also, they have not salted our cul-de-sac, but, there is salt down on roads that have no houses on them? Really?

Oswego's Public Works guys & gals do an awesome job! Thank you to them and Jerry Weaver their director. Decisions have to be made who, when, where, and how an on-slaught of snow like yesterday is going to be taken care of. PW puts in hard exhausting hours - have you seen the back breaking work they do of cleaning up our wet leaves stuck to the pavement for instance? I credit and thank them for a job well done all year long & for the tremendous clearing of roads yesterday! All our kids got home safely from school and pretty much on time despite the weather due in large part to the non-stop plowing by PW. Here's credit to school officials too who had to make on-the-spot decisions about releasing high school students earlier than usual, & Jr. High 15 mins. earlier, so there would be time for bus drivers to pick up the youngest children and get them home at a reasonable time. Thanks to all those bus drivers for running their buses safely under these adverse conditions and thanks to Patch for keeping us informed also!

Opinion - I have a fulltime job. My wife has a fulltime job. Our kids are in school and very busy.Read More We were taught to vote and those elected to the board of education hires a superintendent and the superintendent manages the school district. We know several board members from the past and two current board members. Hiring administrators? The board approves. Hiring new staff? The board approves. Purchasing computers. The board approves. (And we need more!) The answers to all of your questions? The board is elected by us to do a job. Let them do it. The supt is hired by the board to do a job. Let him do it. I don't have the time or the desire to know everything. That is why I helped HIRE (elect) the board of education. We hear from many in our neighborhood and the replacements are needed because this district needs some changes. Side by side comparisons? Really? That is the job of the board of education. We hear great things are happening. Let's all get behind the new people and show support. Thank you and this is just our opinion.

Ginny- you make great points. Thank you.

The school district and park district basically run this town. If you don't like it, leave. That'sRead More the way it has been for 20 years and it isn't going to change. Anytime there is talk of voting down one of their major referendums, the ensuing debate becomes very predictable. Most notably, they threaten to go nuclear and cut sports and the band and that scares residents into shelling out the cash. Remember when the OHS band went to the Rose Bowl parade years ago? There was a referendum not long after that where they said the band would be cut if it didn't pass. Those are the politics these leaches play. And I call them leaches because that's all they are. They suck the blood (property tax cash) from Oswego. There are sooooo many things from over the years I could write here. One that really stands out is a full color booklet that was sent to residents explaining that the Oswego school system was lagging behind and that they needed more money. It was later determined that a construction company paid for the booklet to be sent out. So basically they were trying to convince Oswego residents undercover that we needed more schools..... for them to get the contracts to build. And don't even get me started on the Oswego Ledger newspaper, which has the reach to set the record straight on a lot of things. They are great for coverage of area events and whatnot, but their political coverage has always been a disgrace. I've often wondered if the local government has the paper in their back pocket. That was as of a few years ago. I haven't given them my money since then. Maybe it has changed. If so, I would gladly subscribe again. If you go out into the community and talk about the property taxes and where they are going, everyone agrees that something needs to be done. Don't be fooled by the extremely vocal minority that shows up online (such as on this page) to support the way things currently are.
