When and how did your business get started?
I volunteered for 5+ years at an animal shelter in Naperville. While taking calls from people that wanted to give up their dogs, I discovered a very common reason and that was adolescent dogs that "were too much work." I thought if I could open a business that helped people with some of the work of raising a puppy, I could really help some people keep their dogs. I researched businesses and found Central Bark.
Central Bark is a franchise, so our processes and employee training have been tested and I feel are the best in the area. I chose Central Bark over doing it myself or doing a different franchise because of Central Bark's commitment to helping local animal rescues and shelters.
I opened the Oswego location in September of 2008.
What is your business best known for?
Our best known service, of course, is day care. Pet parents drop off their dogs between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. and they pick up a tired, socialized, happy dog between 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. We take pictures and videos every day and put them in our Shutterfly albums, Youtube channel and Facebook page. We have over 5,000 square feet of indoor play space with 3 large play areas and 8,000 square feet of outdoor play space. We feel dogs should have some outside time every single day and they even get to play in baby pools in the summer and snow in the winter.
Every dog is assessed, no matter their size, age or breed. We do not have breed restrictions, we have behavior restrictions and do no allow any aggressive behaviors. Our staff is trained to watch for all the tiny signals that dogs give when they are uncomfortable and intervening to keep anything from happening. Safety is our #1 priority.
We are also known for our sleepovers. Any dog that participates in day care at least once a week can sleepover whenever needed. We do this for safety. Since the dogs are playing in groups based on play styles, behaviors and size, we need to be assured they get along. So, we ask anyone wanting to utilize our sleepover services go through our assessment and anywhere from 1 to 3 days of day care before going out of town. That way we know how your dog will do in this environment. Dogs that are familiar with this environment are less stressed, which means less illness and more fun for them.
We are also known for grooming. We currently only have one groomer and she's got over 20 years of experience. Marcy is fabulous with all ages and all breeds and she truly enjoys grooming dogs.
In our boutique we carry Fromm and Nutrisource dog foods, which are all natural and healthy for your dog. We can also special order other brands if someone is looking for something else. We also have some fun toys, Pawduke all natural dog treats (made here in Illinois) and training and grooming aids. We also have Thundershirts here to help dogs that have anxiety issues, such as being anxious in new places or scared of thunder.
Does your business offer a special deals card or program?
For day care, people can pay by the day or they can purchase a 10-visit package that gives them a discount. We also have a monthly newsletter and usually have some sort of deal in there.
We also have a loyalty program. It is free to join and you earn 1% back on all purchases and once you get to $5 or more, you can apply that to anything at Central Bark.
