Indies Only: Donut Shop the Culmination of Longtime Dream

Chris McClimans has been waiting 20 years for the right opportunity, and she's finally got her chance.

At 5:30 a.m. Friday, Chris McClimans began living her dream.

That's when McClimans opened My Sister’s Lil Donut Shoppe at 25 S. Madison St., alongside her sister, Betsy Kammerer, the shop’s manager.

“This location is the perfect spot for what I’d envisioned. If I couldn’t open the shop here, I wouldn’t do it. My desire was to be downtown – it has a great history,” McClimans said. “We plan to be part of all downtown events.”

McClimans and Kammerer have prior experience working together in a bakery. McClimans said they work well together.

“It’s my passion, and I’m the laborer,” said McClimans. “Betsy will keep me calm, handle the money and has creative marketing ideas.”

McClimans and Kammerer were born and raised in Oswego, graduating from . McClimans worked for the the past 10 years, quitting to open her donut shop, she said.

The shop will sell a traditional variety of donuts along with cinnamon rolls, danishes and other pastries.

“Down the road we may expand a bit, but for now I want to do one thing well – to offer fresh made donuts and good coffee,” McClimans said.

McClimans partnered with River City Roasters in Yorkville to offer their fresh roasted coffee to her customers. McClimans said she’s happy to support another local small business owner.

Jill Nichols’ friendship with McClimans dates back at least 15 years. McClimans has wanted to open a donut shop ever since she's known her, Nichols said.

“I think it will be a great partnership. The donuts are delicious and both Chris and Betsy have great ideas and are enthusiastic and creative,” Nichols said.

The current plan is to be open Tuesday through Saturday from 5:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. The shop will accommodate special orders on Sundays and be closed on Mondays. Delivery is available. This plan is flexible and hours will be adjusted to accommodate interest, McClimans said.

“This is a dream fulfilled,” McClimans said. “That’s how I feel about opening my donut shop.”
