Sally Beauty Supply says the credit and debit card accounts of 25,000 customers were exposed in a data breach.
One of the world's largest retailers of professional beauty products says the breach, discovered on March 5, is under investigation by the U.S. Secret Service and an independent security firm.
The beauty supply chain has suburban outlets in Joliet, Plainfield, Romeoville, Bolingbrook, Shorewood, Oswego and dozens throughout the Chicago area.
"We take this criminal activity very seriously," the Texas-based company said in a statement. "We continue to work diligently with Verizon on this investigation and are taking necessary actions and precautions to mitigate and remediate the issues caused by this security incident. In addition, we are working with the United States Secret Service on their preliminary investigation into the matter."
