Slideshow: Local Business Sweetens the Day with "Random Acts of Candy"

Mamie's Toffee hopes to make the event a recurring feature.

Plano-based Mamie’s Toffee wanted to make someone’s day just a little sweeter.

So they launched their “Random Acts of Candy” campaign to drop off treats to deserving folk in the area.

Originally, Ernie Bolen, who owns the shop with his wife Pam, said they had started the idea because of a coworker’s newborn son. The baby, Drew, is at Children’s Memorial for treatment of Noonan syndrome, which consists of abnormal development in many parts of the body. Bolen said they wanted to surprise the nurses and doctors caring for him with some treats.

“We then wanted to take it a step farther though and have people nominate others in their community,” said Bolen.

Mamie’s Toffee opened the event in honor of Labor Day for all the hard-workers out there. Bolen said they received around 15 nominations.

Five individuals were picked and Bolen went around delivering treats.

“It was nice to see their smiles when we delivered them,” said Bolen. “Just a little way to brighten someone’s day.”

Mamie’s is hoping to continue the tradition, perhaps quarterly, in the area.

For now though, their toffees and candies can be found at the Oswego Farmer’s Market on Sundays through September 29, or through their online store.
