Speedway Hoping to Construct Building in Oswego This Year

A continuance of the public hearing is set for a special meeting on Aug. 20.

Back in January a Speedway Gas Station expressed an interest to come to Oswego.

The complication is that the location requested – on the northeast corner of Route 30 and Wolf Road – is not only in Oswego and Aurora, but also in Kendall County and Will County.

According to Community Development Director Rod Zenner, Oswego has been in talks with the City of Aurora to have that piece of property annexed – it would need to be zoned to a B-3 commercial service and wholesale district – as well as what Aurora would receive for their part of the property.

Right now the proposal stands for a revenue sharing agreement in which Aurora would receive 25 percent of the overall sales tax for 20 years.

The Speedway, according to plans, would feature a 4,600 square foot convenience store that would have 10 pumps and service passenger vehicles as well as semi-trucks.

Chris Kalischefski of Corporate Design + Development Group, LLC, the group that would be building the Speedway, addressed the board during a public hearing about the plans.

He said they hoped to “construct [the Speedway] this year,” and thanked the Oswego Village staff for their diligence and assistance with Aurora.

He said the plans for the actual building are make it a true masonary building, which “shows our commitment to this community.” The area would also feature plenty of landscaping – over 50 trees.

Although there will be a truck entrance and separate diesel pumps, Kalischefski said the Speedway, “Is not intended to be a truck stop,” and would mainly be for big-box truckers and landscaping vehicles.

One of the larger issues with the building design is Kalischefski proposed two monument signs – one on Wolf and one on 30 – because the lot is “obtuse” and it is not likely those traveling could see with only one sign. The Village has thus far only allowed one monument sign for businesses.

Trustee Gail Johnson said she “wasn’t uncomfortable” with there still only being one monument sign. “You have your name on the canopies,” she pointed out.

Corporate Design + Development Group, LLC has worked in Oswego before, overseeing the building of the Oswego Panda Express on Route 34.

The Village Board voted to continue the public hearing for the Speedway at a special meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Oswego Village Hall.
