Huge First-Half Run Helps Oswego Sweep League Champ Plainfield South

Oswego 56 Plainfield South 50: West's near triple-double, Simelton's hot shooting gives Panthers positive momentum heading into postseason

The Hot Read: Although Oswego High School beat Plainfield South 65-60 in the final Southwest Prairie Conference game for both teams, the Cougars captured their first conference championship in boys basketball.

Patch’s MVP: Oswego junior Ryan West had 14 points, 12 rebounds, eight steals and four assists.

Oswego’s leaders: Sophomore Miles Simelton scored 24 points on 10 of 13 shooting, sophomore Elliot McGaughy tallied 18 and Ryan West scored 14 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, posted eight steals and had four assists.

Plainfield South’s leaders: Junior Ed Presniakovas scored 23 points, senior Zach Snowden added 11 and junior Will Nixon chipped in 10.

The run: After Plainfield South took a 10-3 lead, Oswego went on a 31-6 run to take a 34-16 lead with three minutes left in the second quarter.

Another close one: Of Oswego’s 14 conference games, 10 were decided by five points or less. The Panthers went 6-4 in those games.

Quotable I: “It was our goal to win it,” Oswego coach Kevin Schnable said. “We had an opportunity tonight to beat the champs twice. You want to have positive momentum going into the state playoffs.”

Quotable II: “This played with a lot more aggressiveness from the start of the game,” Plainfield South coach Ken Bublitz said. “I didn’t think we played with enough urgency.”

 Quotable III: “If we wanted to prove a point or make a statement, we needed to beat the champions twice,” Oswego sophomore guard Miles Simelton said. “They already had it locked up. Our motivation was to beat them twice this year and we did that.”

Records: Oswego finishes the regular season 17-8, 10-4 in the Southwest Prairie Conference. Plainfield South is 19-6, 11-3 in the SPC.

What’s next: No. 8 Oswego takes on No. 9 Naperville North (13-11) in the first round of the Class 4A Naperville North Regional at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Naperville. No. 10 Plainfield South will face No. 23 Thornton-Fractional South (12-11) in a play-in game in the Class 4A Crete-Monee Regional at 8:10 p.m. Monday in Crete.
