Heaviest Snow to Hit Chicago Between 5 and 9 p.m.

Two to six inches likely across Chicagoland area.

Update 1:40 p.m. Thursday

Although no snow has fallen yet, Public Works Director Jerry Weaver said public works staff is monitoring the area and has trucks "ready to roll" should they be needed.

He said the biggest concerns in the area is the threat of icing due to the dropping temperatures and the wind gusts, which may get up to 50 mph here.

The National Weather Service has released a Winter Storm Warning that goes into effect for Oswego and Montgomery at 3 p.m. today until 3 a.m. on Friday.

The NWS estimates that rain will turn to snow from west to east late this afternoon or early evening. The heaviest snowfall should occur in the Chicagoland area between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Strong winds will develop and stay as snow arrives.

Current indications suggest anywhere from 2 to 6 inches of snow accumulation in the area, with the highest accumulation predicted for the northwest suburbs. Local areas may receive more if if the heavy snow bands with the thundersnow.

Winds will increase with gusts of 50 to 60 miles per hour expected through the night. 

Due to the combination of wind and snow, visiblity is said to be severly limited and blizzard-like conditions may occur. Falling temperatures will cause the roads to be covered in snow and driving may be treacherous, reports the NWS.

If you must travel tonight, the NWS advises to keep a flashlight and extra food and water in your vehicle.
