Don't Feel Sorry for Me

While out shopping for supplies to use in my classroom, I came across a few people who said they felt sorry for me. For what? Oh yea, I'm a teacher and they think I hate my job. Wrong! I love what I do. So why do people assume that they have to apologize? Perhaps it's the fact that I teach middle school...hormonal teenagers that love you one minute and snap on you the next. Sounds like at least one adult you know, right? ;-)

No, no. I'm convinced that some people truly do "feel" for what teachers do. And they see the creative demise of the teacher through standardized tests. While not an opponent or a proponent of standardized testing (that's for another blog), I am against one test being the end all, be all. Creativity in the classroom comes through in personality now. I admit, I am quite the character. But please don't feel sorry for me. I chose this profession. I knew a lot of what was coming to me. I don't want anyone's pity. I truly just want respect. From everywhere...parents, students, administrators, society.

Please know that most teachers love what they do. And they love your kids. Heck, I will leave my three month old baby to go back and no, I don't just "need the money." I teach because I truly feel it is my calling. I teach because it is a part of who I am. So please, don't feel sorry for me. Embrace your child's teacher. Help them, support them, and build a positive relationship with them.
