Oswego Firefighter Thanks Community for Donations, Reflects on Tornado

Plus check out many local organizations collecting items for tornado victims - animals and humans alike.

Members of the Oswego Fire Protection District made their way to Washington, Ill. on Tuesday to donate supplies collected by the community.

"The Fire chief in Washington was just amazed at generosity shown by this area," said OFPD Deputy Chief Mike Veseling. He described the damage as "horrific" and "reminiscent of [the] Plainfield tornado," that swept through in 1990.

"We have a huge debt of thanks to the people of Oswego and the surrounding area," said Veseling.

The Oswego Fire Department was one drop-off point for donations for tornado victims, organized by a Plainfield firefighter. Off-duty members from the Plainfield and Oswego fire departments made their way to Washington, Ill. on Tuesday with the donations.

Veseling said the firefighters dropped of supplies as best as they could in Washington and set up several supply depots around town so residents could get supplies as they needed it.

"It was our privilege to be a part of that, to really be the hands and feet delivering the generosity of Oswego," said Veseling.

"My thanks to everyone in the community for that effort."

Members of the Plainfield and Oswego fire unions have also pledged and made direct contributions to seven firefighters and their families in the Washington area, all who lost their homes to the tornadoes.
