Fostering Lexi: She's Mastered the Stairs! (And Sort of How to Play with a Ball)

Lexi has mastered the stairs!

One moment she’s staring up at them and the next she’s somehow up top. Going down was a bit harder, but once she started following me down step by step she decided she wanted to be first and raced down them.

Her “landing” needs a bit of work though. She’s always so excited to reach the bottom that she slips and crashes into the front door. Practice makes perfect though.

Lexi and I went on a walk early this morning (Tuesday) before it got super hot outside. Yesterday on our walk she decided she’d had enough and opted to flop underneath a tree about a block from home. We learned a few things on our walk today:

One; Lexi really, really dislikes sprinklers. There was one going off and I figured this would be a great time to see if she did okay with them (she enjoyed drinking out of the hose on Sunday). Nope! As soon as the spray touched her she jumped backwards and refused to go towards them.

Two; Lexi does like children! We visited our bus stop full of elementary children and she was absolutely darling with them and got lets of pets in return. I hope her forever family has some kids as she would love to play with them.

Three; Whenever we see a new dog or person Lexi will “freeze” and stare at them. Not sure what to make of it. Any ideas?

One of Lexi’s new favorite things are her “icey-cubes.” When we first introduced her to ice cubes she would sort of stare at it, but now she chows down and loves watching them skitter on the floor.

However, she’s not a fan of the fleas. She was supposedly flea-free when we got her, but my mom and I have picked about 10 of the little buggers out of her fur. Poor thing. Whenever she goes to scratch we try and scratch there too and see if we can’t root up any more. She’s got her Frontline (applied Sunday) so hopefully they’ll go away soon.

And I am pleased as punch to report that Lexi actually picked up a ball (a regular ol’ tennis ball, thanks for the suggestion, Julie D.!) and chewed on it for about ten minutes this afternoon. All that running around and chasing after the ball to try to get her to chase it must ended up working somehow. Or maybe her Labrador retriever instincts to chew are kicking in. She’ll also hold her bone for a few minutes sometimes, but hasn’t tried to eat it yet.

Right now she’s pretty fixated on the back door (A ComEd guy walked by and she is just waiting for him to walk back) so I think that’s a cue to get up and go for a stroll around the yard.

Lexi will check in with y’all later!
