Fostering Lexi: The First Night

Meet Lexi, a beautiful one and a half year old yellow lab.

Lexi is my foster dog for the next couple of weeks. My mom and I are watching her through the foster and rescue group Casey's Safe Haven. She's a short-term foster, meaning we'll be caring for her for a couple of weeks and then hopefully finding her a forever home.

I'm super excited to be able to help Lexi and I'll be sharing our story here along the way. So, let's start at the beginning.

My mom and I picked Lexi up tonight at about 7:30 p.m. in Batavia. She'd been traveling for the last 11 hours from a shelter down in Arkansas to come up here.

We'd been told she was a bit timid and rather shy and was also severely underweight. Well, the last bit is true but she is sweet and social as can be. When we first saw her in her crate it was love at first sight.

Lexi is super sweet and loves to give kisses. We went for a little stroll around the parking lot area so she could stretch after that long ride and use the bathroom.

After a ride back home to Oswego, which she spent lying down on her super comfy crate from Casey's Safe Haven, she got a tour of our yard. Our neighbors have a party going on behind us and she seemed rather taken with all the children yelling and laughing: we're hoping that's a good sign she'll like kids!

Lexi then came inside and got a tour of the house. So far no shoe-chewing so that's a plus! We got her some dinner (she hadn't eaten all day) and she went right to work! You can sadly see in the picture below her ribs, so we're hopefully going to be able to get her up to a healthier weight before her adoption.

She's rather fond of the toilet bowl for water, but I think we've finally steered her towards where she should be drinking from!

After she ate we went for a walk around the neighborhood to let Lexi get acclimated.

All that walking seems to have tuckered her out. She's sleeping right now in front of me as we're watching a movie (Princess and the Frog!).

Tomorrow will be our first real day and we're excited! There's going to be a bath so wish us luck!
