Giving Back: Library Volunteers, Operation Welcome You Home, Trivia Night

There are plenty of ways for area residents to give back to the community. Here you can find several ways to do so.

MONTGOMERY

WHAT: Teen Volunteer Opportunity

WHEN: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 28

WHERE: Oswego Public Library, 1111 Reading Drive, Montgomery.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Teens ages 13 to 17 are needed to assist with the library's Dia de los Muertos program.

WHY GO? Teens will volunteer with program registration, the program itself, and/or both. The library is looking for mature and responsible students to serve as volunteers. Teens must register to volunteer.

SHOREWOOD 

WHAT: Operation Welcome You Home

WHEN: 5 p.m. Oct. 6

WHERE: The event will begin at Home Depot at Route 59 and Black Road.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Operation Welcome You Home will invite the public to help welcome home eight soldiers from their service in Afghanistan.

WHY GO? Staging will take place at 5 p.m. at Home Depot, with a briefing taking place at 5:15 p.m. Attendees will escort the heroes to the Cantigny Post VFW 367, 826 Horseshoe Drive, Joliet, where a ceremony and concert will be held. Flag holders are needed to line the streets and entrance to the Cantigny VFW. Boy and Girl Scout troops, Civil Air Patrol and any other groups are welcome to join in the flag line.

MINOOKA

WHAT: Trivia Night

WHEN: 6 to 11 p.m. Oct. 15

WHERE: Chapin's East-Minooka, 502 Twin Rail Drive, Minooka.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: This Minooka Police Department event will raise money for Special Olympics Illinois.

WHY GO? The event will include 10 rounds of trivia, with 10 people per team. An appetizer platter will be included for each team, and each player will receive  a Special Olympics T-shirt. The event will include a silent auction and door prizes.

COST: $25 per person, $250 per table.

WHAT: Teen Volunteer Opportunity at the Oswego Public Library

WHEN: Noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 30.

WHERE: Oswego Public Library, 32 West Jefferson St.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Teens ages 13 to 17 are needed to assist with trick-or-treat prizes at an event.

WHY GO? Volunteers will be able to help with the program, program preparation, or both. The library is looking for mature and responsible students. Volunteers must register to help with the program.
