Two Oswego Toastmasters Members Advance to Area Level Speech Contest

Angel Rios and Pam Nagel will compete in Area 62 Humorours and Tale Tales speech contestson Saturday, Sept. 29.

Theis pleased to announce that two of its members will compete in the Toastmasters Area 62 Humorous and Tall Tales speech contests on Saturday, Sept. 29. 

Angel Rios and Pam Nagel are the winners of the Oswego Toastmasters club’s Humorous and Tall Tales speech contests, respectively, which were held Tuesday, Sept. 4.

With a speech titled, “Hero on a Saturday Morning,” Rios, who is a new member of Oswego Toastmasters, drew big laughs as he described a diaper change gone wrong while parenting solo one Saturday morning.

“It’s a situation any parent can relate to,” Rios said. “At the time I wanted to cry because anything that could have gone wrong, did. But looking back on it now, I can’t help but laugh, and I hope others will, too.” 

Nagel regaled the audience with a tall tale about how her clever cat, Bartholomew, has turned her into a cat toy in her speech titled, “Who Do You Think You Are?”

“I had fun writing this speech because everything is a game to Bartholomew. It wasn’t difficult to exaggerate his antics into an unbelievable story, which is what tall tales are all about,” Nagel said. 

Speech contests are one of many ways that Toastmasters members can gain speaking experience. Competition begins at the club level, and winners continue competing through the area, division and district levels. The Area 62 Humorous and Tall Tales speech contests will take place on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. at the RR Donnelley facility, 1000 Windham Pkwy, Bolingbrook, Ill. 

The Oswego Toastmasters club meets on the first and third Tuesdays of every month at 7 p.m. at the . All guests are welcome.
