Career Day a Huge Success at Homestead Elementary

Something spectacular happened at District 308’s Homestead Elementary School in Aurora, Tuesday, November 26, 2013.  Spearheaded by Reading Specialist, Ms. Luann Gerth and her team, the school’s Third Annual Career Day event unfolded without a hitch.

Only such an event would lead to the hallways being riddled with an exciting combination of dress suits, flame retardant clothing, rappelling gear, cream cheese frosting, city of Aurora maps, a parachute and Honorary Police sticker badges.  But then, it’s not every day when the school is visited by engineers, military personnel, a stunt man, a toy designer and many more career representatives that dazzled the budding youth into thinking about possible careers paths in the coming years.

“I loved seeing the kids’ excitement over what our speakers shared about their careers,” explained Principal Mrs. Mindy Renier.  “We want our students to find a passion and make a career of it.”

Homestead Elementary’s Career Day offered the real stories behind career choices with the 30 guest speakers.  And, with many words of wisdom echoing in the hallways, one second grade student’s knee jerk reaction to change his career path was prompted by a police officer’s description of working long hours on cases or having holiday shifts.  “I don’t want to be a police officer anymore,” the student wailed, “because I will miss a lot of important years (with my family).”

Elementary School isn’t too early to make career choices, explained Computer Engineer, Mr. Raspberry.  “The time to plan your career is here and now.” And, there is no doubt that his audience of amazed students will remember his presentation of the evolution of cellular technology that helps him “connect with people all over the world.”

While this popular event had a tremendous impact of connecting the students to their future, it is also a type of community event that Urban Mission Developer, Dan Beirne, referred to that also “brings people together despite their differences.”  By offering the widely varied community representatives, Homestead’s Career Day Event did just that, they connected their students to their community.

Homestead Elementary is an Oswego District 308 school that was built in 2002. Homestead currently educates 697 students and has achieved the Academic Excellence Award status in 2008 through 2012.
