Boulder Hill Man Sentenced to 12 Years for Attempted Armed Robbery

Cory M. Paytes, 23, pleaded guilty to attempted armed robbery and aggravated battery in which he threatened an Oswego Arby's employee with a handgun in December 2011.

A Boulder Hill man has been sentenced to 12 years for charges of attempted armed robbery and aggravated battery in an incident in December of 2011, according to Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis.

Cory M. Paytes, 23, of the 0-99 block of Eastfield Road in Boulder Hill, pled guilty in March 2013 for charges stemming from an incident on Dec. 13, 2011 at the Oswego Arby’s in the 200 block of Douglas Road.

Oswego Police responded to an armed robbery in progress and learned that two men wearing ski masks and dark clothing, one armed with a handgun, had forced their way into the Arby’s while an employee was taking out the trash.

The employee tried to run, said the report, but was thrown against a wall and punched in the face and arm. At gunpoint, the employee was asked about the whereabouts of the manager, and the robbers learned that the manager had escaped detection and had called 911 to initiate the police response.

Both robbers fled the scene upon learning the manager was not there to open the safe.

Oswego police recovered a handgun, black gloves and a ski mask near the restaurant and shared the information with other local police departments, as a pattern of similar robberies was emerging.

On January 16, 2012, Paytes and another were arrested in an unrelated armed robbery in Naperville, and in a subsequent interview Paytes admitted to committing multiple robberies, including the one at the Oswego Arby’s.

Paytes also robbed a CiCi’s Pizza in Plainfield on New Year Year’s Eve in 2011 and multiple other pizza restaurants, police said.

Weis commended the coordinated efforts of the Oswego Police and the Naperville Police to bring Paytes to justice.

Paytes was sentenced to 12 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the attempted armed robbery, concurrent with a five-year sentence for the aggravated battery charge, said Weis.

Both sentences will be served concurrent with a 14-year sentence imposed on the Naperville/DuPage County case and Paytes will be required to serve three years of mandatory supervised release upon his release from custody.
