Crossfit Oswego Hosts 9/11 Memorial Day Workout to Honor and Support Local Organization

The workout will take place Saturday morning at 38 Stonehill Rd.

Nearly 11 years ago, September 11, 2011 changed thousands of people’s lives.

Joe Miranda, co-owner of Crossfit Oswego, is hoping through his 9/11 Memorial Workout to change the lives of some kids for the better.

Miranda said he wanted to do something to honor all of the lives that were lost in the attack and to do something positive. So working with fellow owner Ryan Kovarik,  Battalion Chief Jeff Warren and Chief Dwight Baird, both who are members of Crossfit Oswego, he came up with a workout that would raise funds for a charity and remember each individual who gave their life to save another.

The workout is composed in a heat with numbered activities that give a salute to each group of lives lost during 9/11.

“We wanted to immortalize the 343 firefighters, 60 police department men and women and all the others that gave their lives,” said Miranda.

As such, the workout titled “343 Memorial 9/11 WOD” and consists of workouts that include the numbers 60, 23 and 37. 60 represents the police department men and women that died in the 9/11 attacks, 23 represents the NYPD men and women and 37 represents the Port Authority Officers men and women.

Miranda encouraged athletes to wear weighted vests, fire gear, police gear or military uniform while they complete the workout. “It’s a good symbol of them and what they stood for,” said Miranda.

Several local law enforcement and fire department officers will also be participating in the heats, with two specifically set aside for them at 11:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

The workout will take place at the Oswego Crossfit, 38 Stonehill Rd., from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. with heats going off in half hour increments. Miranda asks athletes to arrive at least half an hour prior to their workout.

The cost of the workout is $20 and t-shirts can be purchased for an additional $20, non-participants are welcome to purchase shirts as well. 100 percent of the profits will go to the chosen charity, a youth burn camp called “Camp I Am Me.”

Miranda said they wanted a charity that donated the funds directly to the cause and they landed on Camp I am Me, which is locally based in Mount Prospect through the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance.

Camp I am Me provides the setting for burn survivors to share their common experiences while being able to play and not feel self conscious about their scars.

At this point there are about 80 participants signed up and Miranda said there is room for about 15 more. Interested persons can email Crossfit Oswego at info@crossfitoswego.com with name, phone number and desired workout time.

“If people want to come participate, that’s great, and if people want to come and just be spectators that’s great too,” said Miranda. There will be different outfits and gear spectators can try on, a CPR dummy and other activities happening around the workouts.

Miranda said there will also more than likely be firefighter boots set up to collect donations. Donations can be made to “Camp I am Me” and delivered or mailed to Crossfit Oswego.
