Felon Charged in 2011 Fight, Gun Incident in Oswego
Jerry Burton, who is currently in custody with the department of corrections, faces new charges.
A former Oswego resident faces felony charges three years after police responded to reports of fights at two locations in Oswego.
Jerry A. Burton, 28, is charged with being an armed habitual criminal and two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon stemming from a pair of April 10, 2011 incidents.
Capt. Jeff Burgner said police responded to a fight in progress at a bar and restaurant at 2745 Route 34, at around 12:36 a.m. April 10.
When officers arrived, they learned the combatants had fled the scene and one was possibly armed with a firearm. During the investigation, police were dispatched to a second fight — this time behind the Goodrich Kendall 10 Theater, 95 Fifth St.
While on the scene of the second fight, police discovered a revolver in a vehicle involved in the incident, Burgner said. The gun was sent to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab for analysis and numerous subjects were interviewed, according to police.
The charges against Burton come after a nearly three-year investigation. According to police, Burton previously lived in the 0-100 block of Adams Street in Oswego.
While no one was shot in the 2011 incident, Burgner said Burton did suffer a cut to his face.
Burton is currently serving a six-year sentence in the Illinois Department of Corrections after a conviction on a Kane County charge of being an armed habitual criminal, according to IDOC. Records show he previously served time for convictions on charges including aiding/abetting/possessing a stolen vehicle, unlawful possession/use of a weapon by a felon and mob action.
