Plainfield fire officials are investigating a fire that destroyed a vacant home in Kendall County early Friday.

Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton said the two-story house in the 1500 block of Johnson Road, Oswego was already well involved by the time firefighters responded at around 1:38 a.m.

"The house was a total loss," Stratton said, adding firefighters worked to prevent the fire from spreading to a large corn field nearby. The home is located about a half-mile off the road, just north of Route 126 and west of Ridge Road.

Stratton said he was trying to determine who owns the home early Friday morning.

"The house has been abandoned for years," he said. "I honestly can't remember that last time somebody lived out there."

Stratton called the fire "suspicious," saying investigators were returning to the house Friday morning to survey the scene in the daylight.
