Frauds, Scams Targeting Seniors on Rise, Oswego Police Offer Advice

The most current popular scam involves a phone call telling the victim they've won millions in a lottery.

Oswego Police have recently seen an increase in the amount of fraud/scam cases involving senior citizen victims.

The most popular scam currently being utilized by criminals starts with a phone call saying you have won millions of dollars in a lottery. The victim is told they need to pay fees upfront to receive their winnings. Victims are instructed to purchase a Green Dot/Money Pak Card and then provide the caller with the security code on the back of the card.

Once doing so the funds on the card are withdrawn immediately. Oswego Police strongly encourage residents to never send money to someone they do not know.

Residents with parents who are senior citizens should talk with them about potential scams or contact Oswego Police for advice when dealing with questionable financial activity.

Considering potential scams are sometimes delivered via the United States Postal Service, Oswego Police also encourage residents with parents who are senior citizens to review their mail with them for potential scams.
