Illinois State Police to Conduct Roadside Safety Check

The check will take place overnight from Feb. 22 into Feb. 23 on the I-88 ramp to Route 31 near Batavia.

The following is from a press release issued by the Illinois State Police:

The Illinois State Police (ISP), District 15, will conduct a Roadside Safety Check in Kane County during the hours of 11 p.m. February 22 until 4 a.m. February 23, according to Captain Joe Perez. The roadside check will be held on the ramp from the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) to Illinois Route 31 (IL-31).

The State Police have zero tolerance for impaired driving in Illinois. Officers working this detail will be watchful for drivers who are operating vehicles in an unsafe manner, driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license, transporting open alcoholic beverages or Driving Under the Influence (DUI).

Alcohol and drug impairment is a significant factor in nearly 40 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois. Roadside checks are designed to keep our roads safe by taking dangerous DUI offenders off the road. This project is funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety.

It's really not that big a deal, don't be drunk, have a safe vehicle , and current insurance , and no outstanding warrants. Pretty simple.
Chad Baker February 22, 2013 at 02:41 pm
funkychicken, sounds like your okay with the checkpoints. Would you be okay with them using something the "see" in your car as probable cause to search your trunk? A frisk search of you or your family?
The republic that we have built is in its infancy and the rights we have are fragile. I get real nervous when things like checkpoints become acceptable.

You are exactly right Chicken, honest law abiding citizens have nothing to worry about, plain and simple. If you are worried then most likely you are hiding something. Nothing wrong with safety checks, especially this one that is targeting "impaired drivers." Would you like to be the victim of an impaired driver? I wouldn't so let the checks begin!

Lindsay, local police are not funded by the federal government.

Look to Naperville to see the logical extension of police state tactics carried to extremes! All this nonsense about privilege was and is a cover for taxation without representation.

Sounds like your just paranoid, If a policeman wants to inspect my car to protect his / her safety. I am fine. I don't carry illegal items. I really don't travel around with things that will land me or my family in jail.
You really need to lighten up. Have you ever been to Canada? They have fish checkpoints all the time. They can look anywhere anytime. In your car in your camper in anything that can hold a fish fillet. They will confiscate your car, boat, tackle and all fish if they illegal fish. Just play by the rules we all have to work with and don't get so worked up.

Not as simple as "don't be drunk, have a safe vehicle, and current insurance, and no outstanding warrants" or "you can obey the law and go anywhere you wish without worry". This freedom allows these cops to pick and choose who they wish to give a hard time to and why ... particularly since the entire thing is based, again, on a need for State funds. It grants those cops the freedom to harass for any reason - a foreign concept to anyone who has not personally dealt with it, but believe me when I tell you it still happens every day - - and they are commended for doing so since the goal is to give out expensive tickets and earn the State some big bucks. Very Big Brother-ish.
Chris Diehl February 22, 2013 at 03:22 pm
These are not for a need of state funds. To be honest tickets are not a revenue maker. Wait for the results of the safety check, they will be technically spending more with the officers salary then the tickets they issue.
Very simple to stay sober or get pulled over!

My knowledge comes from a major in criminal justice, not some brain washed citizen that believes the government is out to get them.
thefunkychicken February 22, 2013 at 03:26 pm
thats really all this comes down to Chris, you notice they don't have this at rush hour in the evening. This is aimed to keep impaired drivers off the road and make sure drivers have insurance current. I have been thru these. its really no big deal.

Unless you are a tea party member, ex-veteran, supporter of our Constitution, a vocal opponent of government tyranny and oppression, legal gun owner then you are consider a potential terrorist and can be put on no fly lists and or disappear under the NDAA without a trace. Wake up while you still have some freedoms to protect!
Rick February 22, 2013 at 03:33 pm
Yes Dawn, when they ask for your license and registration, simply tell them your name is "anonymous"! That'll throw them off for a bit.
Chris Diehl February 22, 2013 at 03:35 pm
I'm glad I'm not the only logical thinker here lol. You are exactly correct about the time frame!
Rick February 22, 2013 at 03:37 pm
Gerard, you forgot black helicopter operator, Area 51 employee or JFK assassin.
Rick February 22, 2013 at 03:40 pm
Typically the ones that worry about checkpoints are the ones with something to hide. Leave your weed at home Chad Baker and you'll be fine.

One note. Currently in Illinois there is no way to check current insurance. An insurance card does not prove that the insurance is actually in force. There are no centralized insurance databases except in California and the California database is only voluntary, so only some insurnace companies participate.
Chad Baker February 22, 2013 at 03:59 pm
Rick, please don’t take as derogatory comment. I’m not looking for a flame war, or trolling or anything else.
But I highly recommend doing some reading on the origins of the 4th amendment, so you can understand my comments are based on. Particularly I recommend reading James Otis’ (a British Colonial Lawyer) speech in 1761 that influenced the founding fathers inclusion of the 4th amendment in the U.S. Constitution.

Funkychicken, Canada is not a Republic, it is Parlimentary Democracy (aka Constitutional Monarchy). They have no where near the same level of freedoms and rights that we do in the United States.
Richard R February 22, 2013 at 04:51 pm
I think we should have a viewing party for this road side check. And we can wait to see if Dawn is in the group of people pulled over in this.

How about during those hours where we have people texting, reading and doing other stupid things while driving? Driving is very risky as is going to movies, school, work, etc. I find it interesting that people just think if you abide by the laws you will be okay. I know for a fact that most people don't even know what's a law and what's not. There are so many laws and according to some police officer friends I have, they don't even know all the laws. I understand the premise behind trying to keep drunk drivers off the roads but honestly they are not the only drivers who are a danger to us "law abiding" citizens. I have nothing to hide but telling me to just "follow the laws", doesn't ease my fears of being arrested for something I didn't even know was a law or worse, some trumped up charge! I always love when people tell me that my ignorance doesn't give me a free pass. I don't necessarily believe someone to be ignorant just because they don't know all the insane and hundreds upon hundreds of laws on the books. As for insurance, your license plate should have your insurance information tied to it. This would allow an officer to run your plate and see that you do indeed have insurance. This could be accomplished through communication with the DMV and the insurance agencies. Then, the only reason to pull someone over would be for moving violations and the such.

Gerry, loosen your tinfoil hat, its obviously constricting the blood flow to your brain.

Here's a thought: If these 'safety checks' were truly about safety trying to keep drunks off the road, they could do it in a much less intrusive manner. They could use the same man-power, and place officers outside dozens of bars to meet people when they leave. They could offer FREE breathalyzers before anyone even thinks about getting behind the wheel - A lot of people under-estimate how much they have to drink. Anyway - in my opinion - these road checks are about nothing more than raising money in fines.
Benjamin February 22, 2013 at 10:10 pm
These comments are hilarious. Here is the bottom line solution: don't drink and drive. Unreal. Scared about your rights being violated? Take a class or two and learn when you can be confident telling a cop, "No".

Those that are ignorant of history are bound to repeat it. Suggest you read the histories of Russia, China, Germany, Cuba and a dozen other past and present civilizations and countries. It is always the same the countries prosper and the people who created it pass it on to the next generations who have had everything handed to them and become too lazy to even vote. They blindly follow the piper who gives them everything in return for their freedoms. Good luck suckers!
