by Erin Gallagher

Two student scholarships are available through the Oswego Fire Protection District, according to a press release. Each scholarship is $500.

The scholarships are given in honor of a member of the district that has shown exemplary service to the people of the community, the release said. This year the scholarships are for Jim Detzler.

"He dedicated his life to serving the people of our district in many capacities ," according to the release.

Detzler was a volunteer firefighter from 1961 to 1988. He became chief in 1968 for twenty years. Afterwards, he was appointed a board of trustee, always remaining associated with the district.

"The OFPD would like to honor Jim Detzler by awarding two $500.00 scholarships to two recent  graduates that will be pursuing a degree in the fall of 2014," it said.
