Oswego Man Charged in Pizza Place Robbery

Other local hold-ups date back to November.

Oswego and Montgomery men who police say may be connected to several armed robberies at pizza shops last year, including the , were caught in the act Monday night, police said.

The  had been conducting surveillance of the men, suspected of involvement in several other area robberies, when they were observed committing an armed robbery at Papa John’s Pizza, 1220 W. Ogden Ave., said Naperville Police Sgt. Gregg Bell in a news release. 

At about 10:15 p.m. Monday, police observed Cory M. Paytes, 22, of the 0-99 block of Eastfield Drive in Montgomery, and Travis J. Gamble, 22, of the 0-99 block of Anna Maria Lane in Oswego, committing the armed robbery, Bell said.

The men attempted to flee the restaurant, Bell said in the release, but officers were able to apprehend them after a brief foot chase.

Pates and Gamble were each charged with armed robbery, a Class X felony; aggravated robbery, a Class I felony; and resisting an officer, a Class A misdemeanor.

“Information had been developed that these individuals could be involved in these armed robberies,” Bell said in a phone interview. “This is still an ongoing investigation. By no means is it over.”

In November, Domino’s Pizza shops in  and Naperville were robbed, along with other shops in the Western suburbs.  leading to an arrest. Bell said the investigation is ongoing and he couldn’t say for sure whether the men were involved in the Domino’s robberies. 

Along with Naperville, the Lisle, Plainfield, St. Charles, Yorkville and Oswego Police Departments were involved in the apprehension and arrest of Pates and Gamble.

The men were taken to the DuPage County Jail, Bell said.
