Oswego Man Given Sentence for Drug Induced Homicide

Jose Mares, 39, was sentenced for a delivery of a controlled substance that led to a lethal overdose in October 2009.

An Oswego-area man was sentenced to 10 years after pleading guilty to charges of a drug-induced homicide and the delivery of a controlled substance.

Jose Mares, 39, of the 100 block of Dolores Street, of unincorporated Kendall County near Oswego, was sentenced for an incident in October 2009 where he delivered an eventually lethal dose of heroin to 39-year-old Aurora resident Thomas Hallock.

Mares was also indicted on a charge of unlawful delivery of controlled substance while within 1,000 feet of a public park (Carriage Park)—a class 1 felony.

He was after an investigation by the Kendall County Sheriff’s office.

“Both parties made horrible decisions that day,” said Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis in a statement. “Mares will have to live with the fact that his actions in delivering heroin to Hallock ultimately led to Hallock’s death. It is just one more example of how deadly these drugs can be.”

Weis said people need to “understand these drugs” and that the delivery of the drugs can have serious consequences for all involved.

Mares will be required to serve three years of mandatory supervised release after he serves his seven-year prison sentence at the Illinois Department of Corrections.
