Oswego Police: Fraudster Using Non-Profit's Name in Email Scam

Police are warning residents not to wire money to scammers in Manila.

Oswego police warned residents to be wary after bogus emails were sent out in the name of the Kendall County PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) executive director asking for money.

The email, which purported to be from Anne Engelhardt, claimed the executive director had been mugged while on a trip to the Philippines, saying it was an emergency and asking recipients to send money.

It was all a hoax by some unscrupulous fraudster, according to police.

"Oswego Police are happy to report that the executive director has not in fact been mugged and is still in the country," police said in a message posted on Facebook. "Any generous donations from the general public to the local PAD shelter SHOULD NOT be wired to Manila."

Here's a list of donations legitimately needed by PADS. Click for info on how to make a monetary donation to the Yorkville-based non-profit. PADS provides temporary, safe shelter to homeless men, women and children in Kendall County.
