Oswego Police Investigate Hate Crime

One man charged, three still sought.

One man has been charged as Oswego police continue to investigate a hate crime that occurred just after midnight June 24 in the 400 block of Bluegrass Parkway.

Marquitte West, 18, of the 400 block of Bluegrass Parkway, has been charged with one count of mob action and two counts of hate crime after a 29-year-old man was punched repeatedly in the head and kicked several times by four males, according to an Oswego police news release.

Police are calling the battery an isolated incident because the victim knew his attackers, the release said. Rob Sherwood, police media relations officer, said a hate crime was charged because the victim was attacked because of his sexual orientation.

After the attack the four men fled, but police were able to locate West, the release said. He was picked up by police at about 11 p.m. Sunday, and is being held at the Kendall County Jail on $50,000 bail.

The victim was treated at the scene by Oswego Fire Protection District personnel and refused to be taken to the hospital, the release said.

Clarification: The spelling of West's first name has been updated as to how it appears on his drivers license. Oswego Police originally reported a different spelling.
