Oswego Triathlon is July 20; Expect Traffic, Road Closings

Triathlon begins at 8 a.m.

The Oswego Triathlon will kick off at 8 p.m. Sunday, July 20, and Oswego police are reminding residents to expect road closings during the event, which includes a 600-yard swim, 20 km/12.8-mile bike run and a 5 km/3.1 mile run.

From 6 a.m. to noon, Route 71 will be closed from Orchard/Minkler Roads to Plainfield/Washington Street, police said.

Detour routes have been established for motorists who wish to pass through.

  • Eastbound Route 71: Route 71 to northbound Orchard Road to eastbound Route 34 (through downtown Oswego) back to the intersection of Route 34 at Route 31 (trucks and cars).
  • Westbound Route 71: Route 34 westbound (through downtown Oswego) to southbound Orchard Road back to the intersection of Orchard Road to Route 71 (trucks or cars); or westbound Washington Street (cars only) to westbound Route 34 to southbound Orchard Road back to the intersection of Orchard Road at Route 71.

The 20K biking course will also cover several roadways, police said. In an effort to reduce traffic congestion, police personnel will be at several locations along the route. The biking route will cover Route 71 to southbound Plainfield Road to eastbound Woolley Road to southbound Douglas Road to westbound Collins Road to southbound Grove Road to westbound Reservation Road to northwest Minkler Road back to Route 71.

The 3K and 5K (duathlon) running round for the event will take runners through several residential roadways in downtown Oswego between Washington Street and Route 71. Volunteers will be at several locations assisting drivers and race participants. Affected roadways are Douglas Street, Main STreet, Tyler Street, Monroe Street, Benton Street, Hickory Street, Forest Avenue and Judson Avenue.
