Photo Slideshow: Day in the Life of an Oswego Firefighter

The Oswego Fire Protection District invited me to join an eight-hour shift. Here's a photo slideshow of my day.

It was a phone call I never really thought to expect.

Oswego Fire Protection District Lt. John Cornish was on the line asking if I wanted to join one of the department's crews for a shift—sort of a job-shadowing opportunity. To be quite honest, the thought had never crossed my mind, but as a journalist if someone offers you a chance to look behind the scenes of something, almost anything, you take it.

Working from home means I usually get to start my day after I drop off my son at school in the morning. That wasn't to be the case on Friday, April 15. Cornish wanted me at Fire Station No. 1 at the beginning of my shift—6:45 a.m. sharp.

One big difference between my shift and that of the firefighters I'd be shadowing—my shift was eight hours, their's was 24. To say I learned a thing or two would be an understatement.
