Police Chase Ends in Oswego

A 21-year-old Sandwich man allegedly was driving drunk when he ignored several traffic signals and struck another car, police said.

A 21-year-old Sandwich man allegedly hit a vehicle and a reflective post and ignored three traffic devices Sunday night while refusing to pull over for police in Yorkville and Oswego.

Luis D. Nicolas, of the 300 block of East Crofoot Street, drove between 40 and 45 mph, which at times was below the posted speed limit, Chief Larry Hilt said.

Yorkville police tried to pull him over about 8:30 p.m. while he was driving east on Route 34 near Game Farm Road in Yorkville, Hilt said. Oswego and unsuccessfully tried to pull him over at Orchard Road and Route 34, and the pursuit continued down Route 71, where he struck a reflective post at Forrest Avenue and struck another vehicle at Washington Street. No one was injured in that accident, according to an Oswego police news release.

Nicolas stopped at Route 34 and Pearces Ford Road. Police smelled alcohol on him and arrested him without incident, Hilt said.

“The officers told him to turn the car off, and he did it,” Hilt said. “He got out of the car himself when they gave him commands.”

Oswego police also charged Nicolas with hit and run and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Nicolas remained in Kendall County jail Monday morning unable to post 10 percent of his $25,000 bail.
