Slow Down, You’re Driving Too Fast on Wooley and Minkler

Both Wooley Road and Minkler Road will see decreased speed zones at certain parts of the roadway.

Have you checked your speed lately when you’re cruising down Wooley Road or Minkler Road?

The Oswego Police have, and with the Village of Oswego board' vote of approval portions of those roads will see a speed decrease.

The sharp curve just south of Hunt Club Drive will also see a posted speed decrease of 30 mph from 35 mph.

“There have been quite a few accidents on Minkler,” said Oswego Police Chief Dwight Baird, citing 12 accidents with a number of them involving vehicles hitting the guardrail near the creek.

In a memo in board documents, Traffic Sgt. Kevin Norwood said a traffic study was conducted on March 14 and counted 1,259 vehicles driving southbound on Minkler south of Hunt Club and 85 percent of those vehicles were driving at 51.2 mph. Of the 1,103 counted heading northbound, 85 percent were driving at 48.2 mph.

Wooley Road

Baird said more and more kids are walking to Traughber Junior High, located on Wooley Road, but that so far nothing has been done to address the speed issue. About 2,400-2,700 cars travel on that section of a road a day.

“Motorists traveling westbound coming in [to Oswego] at 55mph are not always slowing down to the 35 mph zone,” said Baird.

The police recommended and the village approved to extend the 35 mph speed zone east of the Oswego Fire Protection District Station 1 by 2,000 feet.

“This will make pedestrian travel a little safer in the area,” said Baird.

The Woolley Road recommendation was also supported by the OFPD and Oswego 308.
