Two Oswego Juveniles Arrested for Street Racing: Police

Incident occurred late Friday night.

Editor's Note: A correction was made to this story in regards to which juvenile had been charged with which counts.

Two Oswego, male juveniles were arrested for street racing last Friday evening at Routes 34 and 71 just before midnight, said the Oswego Police Department.

One male juvenile, 17, was charged with street racing and the other male juvenile, 16, was charged with street racing, speeding and failure to signal, according to Oswego police. The 16-year-old was also cited with no insurance.

The incident happened at 11:53 p.m. as police caught one car traveling 60 mph in a 40 mph zone westbound on Route 34. Both cars were stopped by a red light at the intersection of Route 34, Wolf Road and Route 71.

Before a traffic stop could occur, the light changed to green and the two cars took off on southbound Route 71. One of the vehicles failed to signal to merge as the lane narrowed.

A traffic stop was initiated by the Oswego police past Oswego High School and both juveniles were arrested.

Ahhhhhhh.........One also had no insurance idiot. How about be loses control and hits your work van. Not to mention these kids barely have earned their licsence, and they are doing this. They need an early lesson in not killing themselves and others. So......Shut it TLC Floors.

I am pretty sure on 34 the limit is 45......so one car was going under the speed limit and the other was going 15 over, they came to a red light. The one car then tried to pass the other car without signaling. Street racing sounds like a stretch. If they were busted 8 minutes later they would have been in violation of curfew. I think speeding and ticketing for the no insurance would have been the way to go. It's the parents that will be punished regardless for their childrens wrong doing.

Just to let you know Louie, the speed limit is 45mph on 34 until you pass Boulder Hill Pass where it drops to 40mph for that stretch through downtown (and then drops to 35mph once you get on Route 71). My guess is they want that part of the road to be slower since part of 34 along that corridor goes past a residential area.

You don't know what happened when they were pulled over, maybe they were being disrespectful and resisting, you better best believe they are not gonna get off with just a ticket. You don't know exactly what happened, so don't question the police's discretion.

That's whats wrong with America...don't question anything.....look where that has led us... Boy scout scandals, priest scandals, etc. That's the great thing about living in America, you can question everything...which you should.

Give them a place to race! Oswego used to have a race track. We as a society are constantley taking away activities that people enjoy. My family and I enjoy riding atv's and people are so negative about it and they have even put out sharp objects to pop tires! I know there are always going to be people who abuse the rules but that should not prevent everyone else from enjoying their passion. Its sad that we have so many ridiculous rules because of the people who make a big deal out of someone elses mistake. Before you know it we will have red light photos here. The police already waste too much time worrying about if a person has their seat belt on!!!! If a person chooses not to wear their seat belt thats their own CHOICE. Im not trying to down play that the kids made a mistake and disobeyed the law but lets make a positive out of it so it does not happen again. Give them an outlet. Im in favor of having a race track or blocking off a part of a street even if its only once a year. I also would like to have a law pass to allow atv riders to have some rights!

My family enjoys Drag Racing – at the Drag Strip… Don’t get me wrong, “MY” generation did street race, BUT Street Racing is ILLEGAL, always has and always will be. (I personally never did but my husband and his buddies did) Not only are these young kids putting their life in danger they are endangering other drives, innocent drivers and their passengers. And for them being arrested – THEY WERE BREAKING THE LAW. I praise the police department for NOT giving them a warning or a ticket and just letting them go…maybe next time they will think about it before the do it….because next time they could kill themselves or some innocent person.

Are you serious? There are things called laws. Whether it's wearing a seat belt, or not being allowed to race on public streets. You can't justify that it's the community's fault that these kids are bored and need a place to race. Go play sports, go volunteer somewhere...and if you REALLY enjoy racing that much (which is completely fine), then go find a drag strip where it's 1 vs 1 and not 2 vs the community. But let's not act like the police are doing too much here. Just my opinion.

I also forgot to mention, that I've had a past with drag racing. A childhood friend of mine, Jason Rush got killed from doing the exact same thing. Here's a court hearing from the other kid who left the scene: http://caselaw.findlaw.com/il-court-of-appeals/1113397.html And if you STILL don't take this serious...check out this site, in which my friend's name was added to: http://evostreetracers.org/tragedytower.html This stuff is NO joke and it CAN happen in "little" Oswego.

Louie - sounds like they were trying to rush home to make it before curfew....

Shut it TLC ???? Speeding & recless driving is not street racing. Get it right. Of course they are stupid kids. Thats not the point.Maybe pass a law that they should not be out at all at that hour. Maybe mom & dad should be more on top of things, maybe, they need more drivers ed. Maybe mom & dad take away the car, Street racing it ain't JEN . We need more revenue so lets wright more tickets for anything, how about a dent in your bumper too. I'd be happy if the PD could stop the robberys, I dont care about a turn signal.
TLC Carpet Floors and More, Inc. November 14, 2012 at 08:25 PM
Burning what bridge??? Serve what??? When the high paid PD stops the robberys in this town I will cut them some slack. Why so they can build an empire like city hall & the fire station. That are both only half full.Seems to me the questions need to increase.
Monica November 14, 2012 at 09:18 PM
Well they were going 60 miles an hour, that's pretty dangerous. Teenage boys are more likely to die in car accidents for this exact type of behavior...so they should be hit in the wallet as hard as possible, that's what gets through to people! Also, "wrighting" is not a word...I am guessing you meant "writing." And thank you for using your business name, I try really hard to avoid stupidity, so now I know what flooring company NOT to call.

I forgot, every other person in oswego has perfect driving record.
Jacod Dcmouth November 15, 2012 at 01:27 AM
He was probably driving his mom's minivan.
TLC Carpet Floors and More, Inc. November 15, 2012 at 06:50 PM
Thanks Monica, I dont need your business. If I did I would hide my comments I would only list my first name. The kids are wrong, thats not the stupid point. the cops are way over paid for what they do for the tax payer in Oswego. We dont need 100K a year going to parking tickets and turn signal violations. Stop the theft in town, thats what I pay the PD for, thats what ALL citizens in town need. Hope I didnt hit a wrong key.
oswegoannie November 15, 2012 at 09:02 PM
...off to google TLC Carpet...I won't be doing business with you, my friend. I am glad the OPD caught these kids and hopefully their parents take away their car keys for at least a year, givng them more time to grow up and respect other people's right to a safe road! Too bad their names aren't published. A little public embarrassment for parents of troublemakers might not be a bad thing.
oswegoannie November 15, 2012 at 09:08 PM
Regarding OPD stopping cars for turn signal violations...maybe that driver was impaired and a life is saved by this stop. Maybe the stop leads to finding the driver is wanted on a warrant, or has no license or insurance, or the car is stolen. Routine traffic stops keep the rest of us safe in many ways; they are not just about the money from tickets. TLC - learn to see the forest, not just the trees.
